I'm the new owner of an old 1990 Mercruiser 3.0L 130 hp that abruptly shuts down while cruising, but after awhile she starts up again. My problem occured after installing a new throttle which refuses to go in reverse. Could this have anything to do with this new problem?
Thanks for any responses! A mechanic told me I need to "replace the shift cable to drive" and a new alternator.
Thank you for any responses!

sound like the coil is heating up, shorting out, and after cooling it will start again. disconnect the shift cable to controller, and try shifting by hand. very posssible bad cable to outdrive.

Sorry about the double post, I realized I had posted this issue under "outboards" instead of I/O. I will do as you suggest, and respond.
Thanks so much!
