I've got a 89 60 horse mercury. Yesterday wouldn't run worth a crap under 4800 RPM's cleaned the carbs last night and put new plugs in . now she won't even get up past 2200 at any range. did find something interesting in the carb though, the splash guard to the atmospheric jet has been broken off(2nd owner of boat) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

------------------

Hey, Basstrk. Big change in symptoms since yesterday. Did you verify that both cylinders are working? How does it run at idle and low speed now? What happens if you squeeze the ball? Does your fuel pump have a filter on the inlet? What does the filter look like? When you cleaned the carbs, what method did you use to clear the jets?

Pull your plug wires again. Good idea to wear rubber gloves (playtex). Turn her over and verify that each lead will jump at least a 1/2" spark to the block. Then pull the plugs. Are they both wet?

Sorry if this sounds like the third degree. At least one of the above checks or questions should narrow the diagnosis to a mechanical, fuel or ignition fault.

Standing by.
JB

When I cleaned the carbs i soaked them in Chem-Dip for about an hour then sprayed carb cleaner in and through all jets and orfices. then blew compressed air through all jeta and orfices. and blew air through entire carb so there was no water carb cleaner or any thing else in the carbs. I am an ATV mechanic so this wasn't my first carb clean.
