PLEASE HELP!! We hit rocks n our boat is broke!! Mercruiser 4.3 Alpha One

we have our first boat and got in over our heads in a lake with too many wakes and ended up too close to the bank. actually pretty much on the bank. when we tried to pull it out, we hit rocks. we tried to get out by giving it more gas. something snapped and now our boat wont go. we give it gas and it just revs up but no movement in the prop. the prop is all bent up. we keep getting the shear pin answer from everyone but cant seem to even locate it on our boat. We have the whole lower half off and dont know what to do now. not exactly in our budget to go to a marina. any ideas of what could be wrong???

you should have replaced the prop first. now you are in above your head.

Yep, make, model, hp of motor helps.

Might be a shear pin, might be a spun prop, might be a broken gear case.

While you are saving up for the parts to repair the damage, sign up for a boaters safety course. It will help you avoid these kind of situations, as well as basic safe boating.

Since you have the lower off, spin the driveshaft by hand, see if the prop shaft rotates.


And ........ post engine/drive specifics, we'll be able to give better assistance.

We need year, engine model, and SN if the sticker is still on it the valve cover, and the drive type, ie Alpha 1, Bravo, Volvo, OMC, etc.

drive unit number is 0b875292. sn ob897571. alpha one year not sure. we were told it was brand new when we bought it in 09 but looking at the insides of it it doesnt look brand new. how can i find the year?

Hit up the adult's only section too. It has links for the mercruiser shop manuals for your engine and drive. If your boat is older than '91, you should have an Alpha 1 gen 1, newer than '91 it should be a gen 2 (I think '91 is the change yr for them).

boat is an 88 thundercraft but the motor was replaced and im sure its newer than a 91

As long as the transom assembly, etc is original, it should be a gen 1.

if your prop shaft isn't turning when you spin the drive shaft (and you're in gear), you need a new lower unit.

Have someone hold the shiftlever to either side while you spin the prop (easier than trying to turn the shaft) by hand. Does the vertical shaft spin?

After you get it repaired, you may want to invest in a chart or two so you will know where the hazards are. also maybe a boating saftey course.
