Re: Please HelP! with my drive

Thanks for the help even know it's not what I want to hear. I'm not sure where the fluid went. When I pulled the drive to remove the engine there was some oil in the bellows, it wasn't a lot so I was concerned but seeing as the drive doesn't hold a lot of fluid I guess that could have been my problem?

I feel like a 16 year girl that blew her engine because she never checked her oil :(

Ha.... My sister did that exact thing to my 67 Ford Galaxie 500 when she was 16 back in 1975 (I let her "borrow" my car while I was in the Navy). She said " I kept wondering what that little red light meant on the dashboard!!! She still owes me for that!

Back to business.... how much was "some oil in the bellows"? You can estimate how much oil is in the upper by looking in that cavity that you took pictures of. Maybe Don or Chris (others?) can give more accurate quantity guidance on the upper-vs-lower. I could only estimate that about 1/3 of the 1.2+ qts is in the upper?

I would guess 5 or 6 ounces? Not a drop of oil was in the upper, it was completely dry. It's killing me that I would make this mistake. I even have a quart of mercruiser gear oil in my garage, if only it would have been in the drive...

My last question(probably not). Could this have been a result of something I did when reinstalling the engine? I imagine if something was off then then my coupler would have went, not my upper gears.

The "smoking gun" was finding no oil in the upper. Need to chase that down. The fact that you didnt align the motor using an alignment tool before reinstalling the drive wasnt a good path, but shouldnt have caused this.
