Guys,

I need help with a problem on my 90' model 175 HP Merc. I bought this boat just a few days ago and the owner told me that it needed a trim motor. I took the old one off (trim did not work) and installed the new motor yesterday (carefully wiring the new one just like the old one with blue on top, black in middle, and green on bottom).

I filled the resevoir with transmission fluid (while engine was trimmed about half way up). Hit the up button on my trim switch and once the trim engine caught the fluid, the motor trimmed up all the way.........then here's where the trouble started.

I noticed the ground wire on the motor mount (which I have attached a pic of) melted the plastic cover off of the motor mount and burnt into.

Now, when I hit the trim switch, the trim motor runs but will NOT lower the enging. The engine is presently trimmed all the way up.

Any advise? Please help, I know very little about boat motors and do not have the money to spend in a shop.

Also, what do I do about the the burned off plastic cover and the burned ground wire?

Thanks in advance.Mercury Motor.jpg

Re: Please Help with Trim Problem

that happened to me yesterday. my motor was trimmed up and wouldnt go down, despite the fact that the motor sounded like it was running. it ended up being a bad connection at the battery. not enough power was being sent to the trim motor (it wasnt spinning fast enough). check your battery connections and make sure its charged up. also, is there a safety on that motor that prevents it from trimming down while trailering? maybe that got in the way?

Thanks. I have not checked the battery connection yet and I haven't charged the battery lately. I will give that a try. Thanks again.

If that doesn't solve the problem, head on over to McKaysville and have a chat w/ the new owner at N. Ga Marine - they just reopened and the new owner (he was Steve and Edna's mechanic for years) is really good with free advice on many fixes.
