i have a 1979 johnson it had set up for four years after being rebuilt i got the fuel system completly cleaned out was running fine but now will not start the spark plugs are firing and i checked the fuel screen its getting fuel at least to that point any body know what my problem might be

You need a fully charged battery to get the 300RPM needed to have good spark on your motor and you need for the choke plates to be 100% fully closed while cranking for a cold start.

If you run a spark test and a compression test, you can eliminate a lot of possiblities. Both are done with all spark plugs removed. Use a screw-in type compression gauge. You can rig a spark tester with as little as some nails, wire and a dry board, or you can buy one like they sell here at iboats.

compression is 120 122 on all 4 cylenders and battery is fully charged

Chokes closing tight?

You might want to disconnect the black and yellow kill wires from the powerpacks and see if it will start. You will have to choke it to stop it with the wires off.

i guess i havent accually pulled off the carb cover to see if the choke plate is closing but the choke linkage does close and i dont think the choke is the problem but i am open to anything

i dont know if this makes a difference but i have only owned the motor a short time it has always been hard to start when cold i just figured its because it sat up so long but i am talking i started it up one day then the next day it would not start it also blue the fuse on the motor when i turned it over probably longer than i should have but i replaced the fuse and it still turns over fine but will not start

The fuse is not related to the starter. The fuse controls the power to activate the solenoid and to supply power to the control, ignition switch etc.

Because of the small wiring used in the engine harness, accessories should not be wired off of the remote control, but should have their own terminal block wired to the battery.

If the fuse blows when the key is turned to start, you either have a wiring short or the solenoid is not the right kind or is bad.

the fuse is not the problem it only blue one time i replaced it and now its fine THE MOTOR TURNS OVER and fires but will not start

There are many guys willing to help, you just have to be patient. They do this on a voluntary basis.

Check the FAQ for a thread entitled, "Outboard Wont Start". It will be on page 2 of the FAQs. Follow the steps provided and let us know what you find.

it takes fire,fuel,and air to make one run,sounds like you have two of the three,take a spray bottle with some two stroke fuel in it and spray a little fuel in the carbs,if it fires off i would pull the carbs and clean them out,they might have some trash in them or the floats could be stuck. this proceedure is straight shade-tree.

There aren't?? I thought they already gave you all the reasonable advice. Check for a 7/16" spark WITH THE PLUGS IN. If that is ok, then move on to the choke. "help" it close with light finger pressure on the lever while cranking.
