I have a old evinrude 6hp motor that I am having an issue with. The fuel wont stay primed. I have replaced all the fuel lines and all the fittings and bulb to the gas tank. I have also removed the fuel feed tube in the tank to make sure it wasent leaking air into the system somehow. I put a clear fuel line from the fuel filter to the carb and I can get the motor to start and then air seems to be getting in the line from the carb end. I am not sure how this is happening or how to fix it. I am an electrican if this was a spark problem it would me much easier for me. Any thoughs of what to try would be greatly appreaciated.

Re: Please help

you either have a loose hose at the carb, or a float not closing all the way. the pressure from the fuel pump should push the air out. the bulb is not going to stay hard, once the fuel pump starts sucking, the bulb will get softer, as the fuel flows thru it.

Other than what you have said, what exactly is the problem? Will it run? Does it run and quit? Will it keep running if you squeeze the bulb? Does it run right when it is running? Knowing these things will help diagnose your problem. People shoud never put clear fuel lines on a motor. Why?? because you can see the air bubbles in them. Air bubbles are normal and dang near impossible to not have it happen. You just can't see them through the rubber hose.

Re: Please help

I can get the motor to run for maybe 5 mins at the longest then it shuts off. When it is running it sounds fine it will idle smooth and it will run full on. It will run longer if I squeeze the bulb to keep the air out of the line. A small amount of bubles I understand but I am gettin enough air from the carb side to completly fill the line from the carb to the fuel filter thing. Ill try to get some pics tomorrow of the motor and maybe try to get a video of it running so you can hear it. I appreciate the help.

Re: Please help

Air leak in the fuel supply or fuel pump failing.
Just my thoughts though.

Re: Please help

The fuel pump is a small square thing screwed to the side of the power head. The fuel line from the carb runs to the fuel pump.
If you can pump the primer bulb when it is starting to die and it picks back up again, then suspect the fuel pump is bad.
Diagrams are here:
http://shop2.evinrude.com

Replacement pump is Sierra 18-7350, available here at iboats.
http://www.iboats.com/Sierra_18_735...1690491--**********.564118583--view_id.174139

It's not listed as an exact replacement, but I have used it to replace my fuel pump on a 1970 6 HP

Re: Please help

ok I pulled the fuel pump and tore it apart. the gasket that is between the metal housing and the 1st piece of plastic with the large spring has a small tear in it. My motor is a 6402c from what i can tell. the parts diagram has the gasket in the 1 assembley not as a seperate gasket. Have i screwed up by taking the thing apart??? can i just rebuild the fuel pump or do i have to buy a new one. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Please help

I have no knowledge of this pump or the gasket you're talking about. But if you can't get your hands on a rebuild kit right away, could you make a gasket out of gasket material available in any autoparts store? I bought a pack with 2 or 3 different types of material and have used it a few times without any drawbacks that I can tell - assuming the pack has the type of material you need.

Re: Please help

ok I must be retarded. All I can find is the whole fuel pump and its like $80. I cant find a rebuid kit anywhere. I much rather spend $10 than $80 so if you happen to know who carries these things please let me know. My motor is a 1974 I can find a rebuild kit for 91 and newer just not the old sucker I got.

Re: Please help

OK i rebuilt the fuel pump and it ran great in the bucket at the house. I could see it pulling fuel from the tank and feeding the carb. So I took it to the river to see if it would run with a load. i get to the river and sit at the landing and run the motor and it is no longer sucking fuel out of the fuel pump the fuel feeds the carb but the fuel is not coming out of the pump. just sucks all the fuel out of the line and dies. I am guessing I got something wrong in the pump but it ran great for 30 mins in the bucket at the house what gives? Anybody got any ideas.

have you checked the state of the plug(s) after the motor fails??
That may tell you something of why the engine cuts ???
