hey guys, i just changed the water impellor on my kicker motor 1979 johnson 4hp. Everything was going smooth but when i went to push the drive shaft up it wont go in far enough. It needs to go up about another inch. I tried everything and it seems like that is as far as it goes. Does anyone have any ideas??? Its driving me nuts

Re: Please help

i just looked at parts diagram at boatsnet.com
i think the problem is in shift drive(when you pull out lower unit from mid section, you should see water tube and shift drive stickking out from midsection)
this shift rod is bent at the end .you should fit this bent end in smol hole in lower unit

Re: Please help

i have the lower unit out and see the water tube which should go into the small hole that leads to the water impellor. Other than that if i look up the midsection with a flash light i see what looks like a exhaust and the hole where the drive shaft should go. When i insert it i can feel the teeth on the shaft are catching but it just wont go up far enough. I thought maybe it needs to go lower in the lower unit but there is that little key that comes with the impellor that stops it so it cant be that.
