Please identify this motor part

The pictured motor part below is in my 1963 40 hp Johnson in the base of the motor frame right under the carb. Can anyone out there put a name to it and explain it's function? <br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Meaux<br /><br />

Hello Meaux <br />That is your air intake. The part you point out is the air silencer. It is sort of a muffler in reverse. The intake action of a 2-stroke motor is kind of noisy. This is an attempt to quite it down. Weather or not really works I don't know. Most OMC outboards use some type of air silencer, They filter nothing and do not require servicing.

Moe the library usually has manuals for reference.<br /> Also for ease of shoping there is a tab at the top of this page.NAPA,amazon.com blah blah.
