I have a Kenner 2103, 21 1/2 ft bayboat, with a Mercury 225 offshore that has been built up a little. Right now I am running 58mph at 5600 rpm. My hole shot is weak but when I drop pitch I lost alot of topend. How much more speed and gas mileage will a jackplate give me or would it even be worth it. Also what size?
Thanks

Re: Please recommend a jackplate for Kenner boat

If your running a bay boat (Kenner) I would personally have a jackplate. I had a 24 foot Champion which is built on the Kenner hull. It had a 2007 Yamaha 250 HPDI and all sorts of heavy stuff such as live wells (2), a T-top for shade, trolling motor with two batteries plus the starting battery, etc.. Neadless to say, it was heavy! It would run about the same speed, around 58mph as per GPS. If you are going to fish shallow bays etc. the jackplate will help you but you will have to probably go to a 4 blade prop with less pitch to get the most out of it which will cost you speed. As for all out speed, if that is your only concern, a jackplate can help you optimize your engine performance but it will only get you a few more MPH. A decent jackplate (Hydraulic) will cost you around $1000.00 +- installed. There are several manufactures, none significantly better than the other but some are faster in their travel. They come in several sizes of travel and set back. Many, many variables to consider and probably not worth the headache and $$ for a few more MPH. If you are going into shallow waters, a true sportsman will spend the $$$ regardless to help protect the vegetation by moving your prop as high as possible when traversing shallow flats.
