I was unfortunate enough to run aground last week and the pictures attached show the damage to my keel.

What is the assesment of the damage? Real bad? Medium? Should be fine just keep and eye on it?

What if any temporary measures can I take before taking serious action if its not too bad? The boat was in the water for approximately 2 - 3 hours after the incident and I did not notice any real difference in the amount of water that came out of the bilge when I retrieved that day and removed the drain plug, (maybe 10-20 seconds of dripping water which about normal) this leads me to believe that it is not taking water but it definately looks fragile when you look at it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to those that reply.

BTW, the 1st and 3rd picture are of the same area just different angle and zoomed in.

Time to put my tale in the slammer. The second picture looks like someone painted the section or smeared something in it. I have seen lots worse looking and people just keep running them. Myself included. To make it look better clean it out and epoxy the holes shut. To repair grind it down acetone it csm and flare back out gelcoat sand and buff.

Be on the lookout for some dudes named Oops, Woodonglass or Yacht Doctor. I'd put pretty decent odds that at least one of them will probably stop by to help you out in about 5,4,3,2,1......

[For what's its worth, to my newbie eye, it doesn't look that bad.... (definitely something you could fix yourself)].

the keel has been repaired by a novice...

but the area was hit again....possibly by the trailer......check your trailer

i would fill and glass that....then re gellcoat....

1....grind the area back.about 3 inches either side of the area. and clean with acetone

2. fill area with a structural thickened resin.

3 apply 2 layers of csm.....bonding only to the glass.

4....sand new glass somewhat smooth.

5 re gellcoat.

6 sand...fair and polish.

total repair time will be about 3 hours.
