I run 100% salt water, and i know its hard on the engine, even with regular flushings. I was under the influence that a closed system required hull modification for the heat exchanger, but have recently found this is not the case, so it looks like something i could install myself.

I have a Chaparall 220 ssi with the Volvo Penta 5.0L and the DP outdrive.

so here are my questions.

1 is it worth swapping on an engine that has already been ran in the salt for a while? would there be a significant savings on replacing parts, or after run maintenance to warrant the swap?

2 is it an easy install? with my basic understanding, you put the heat exchanger inline between the raw pump and the circulation pump. separating them into two systems.

3 it seems the exhaust is still raw cooled. with the risers and manis being a big investment, i was hoping to include exhaust cooling in the system to help preserve them. is there a way to do this?

4 i would still need to flush the exchanger and exhaust correct? would the exchanger hold up to salt water for long term?

Thanks in advance.

Ayuh,.... There's Problems convertin' motors that have a history of saltwater use,...
Salt, 'n antifreeze create a gue that plugs up everything,...

Ya oughta wait til when yer replacin' the motor, to go with the freshwater coolin',....

You Can go with a Full system, it just takes a much bigger exchanger to get rid of the manifold heat,...
'n the risers will still see Salt, as that's where the raw water is dumped,...

do i need to run antifreeze in it? we hardly get freezing temps here, and i could drain the system during the short winter. does antifreeze move the heat that much better then water.

I did a little more research and found a page that explained half vs full systems.

thanks for the info!
