Please Tell Me I Didn't Mess-up a Bunch of Boats

I finally finished using-up a grease gun full of Marine Wheel Bearing Grease. At least that's what the grease gun said. I took out the cartridge and to my horror I see "Triple Guard Grease". I love the stuff and it's about the best there is for what it is intended, which unfortunately does not include wheel bearings. The mechanic before me must've put it in there. I have been using it in gimbal bearings and bearing buddies all summer. If there is one bright spot in this it is that I only added it to what was already there in every case but one. Should I worry?

I am not familiar with triple guard grease but as long as it is not synthetic you should be fine. Most greases will work together well.Synthetics clain that all grease should be removed first. If you are really concerned ,just get the grease you want and pump it up and wipe the excess.Charlie

On my squezze tupe of Triple Guard ..<br />Sticks to fritional surfaces.<br />Prevents corrosion/"even from saltwater".<br />Repels water/"will not mix with water"<br />Waterproof/Saltwaterproof.<br />Protects/"will not swell, crack, seals, etc".<br />Low Temps okay.<br />Compatible/"with other greases".<br />Stability/will not breakdown.<br /> I'd forget about it...

Any grease is better than no grease I would think.

Hehe Robby,<br /> <br /> I don't know about anybody else, but I never count off for spelling . . . as long as the answer is right. ;) <br /><br /> As for the grease, it sounds like you were using it on other peoples boats, right? If someones wheel bearing fails because the Triple Guard can't handle the heat...well, you would probably be liable legally. Of course, they would probably not test the grease unless someone got hurt...<br /><br /> Of course, the problem would be how in the heck to figure out which boats had been greased from that tube of grease and how to contact people.<br /> <br />Just my $0.02 worth,<br />Joe

A while back, OMC used to market an aluminum complex grease product called Marine EP/Wheel Bearing Grease. It puzzles me as to why OMC would supply this product if their Triple-Guard is certified for wheel bearing applications. Sorry, I would not use it and would also be careful with mixing different types of grease for wheel bearing applications. <br /><br />IH

Back when I was know it all kid I used union 76 white grease on trailer axle bearing all of the time. Never had any problem. Well except when my dad cought me. That was when I learned that there was more than one type of grease.

Re: Please Tell Me I Didn't Mess-up a Bunch of Boats

I'm a marine mechanic. And yes this was on customer boats. The only boat I used this exclusively on was one I repacked the wheel bearings with, then filled the bearing buddies with it. That was the unit I used it up on and I redid it just to be safe. The rest I just pumped some in over whatever was already there. Since it is compatible, I'm fairly confident I'm okay on them. Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll sleep a little better tonight. Last night was a tough one, but more for the Badger game. They were destroyed 49-14. OUCH! Bye-bye Rose Bowl :(

Willy, I think your OK, because the only grease you really DON'T want on any roller, ball, or needle bearing would be anything with "Teflon"-a NO-NO for those applications.

Willy, if it'll help make you feel any more better, one year I forgot to but the right grease in my little tool box I carry on our fishing trips. Packed Triple Guard instead of Wheel Bearing greas. Well, on the way back I had to do one bearing. Packed the Trip Guard on top of the Red Stuff. No problems. Drove 400 miles like that.
