Just bought a used 2003 Yamaha 4 stroke 30 jet that the owner says has less then 5 hours on it, and it sure looks brand new.
Here is the issue, we took it for a short test run and it ran perfect, I paid for it and brought it home, well the first thing I did was pulled the dip stick to check the oil and oil pour out of the dip stick hole. The guy over filled the oil a bunch!!! I drained the oil to the proper level, checked for signs of leaks and pulled the plugs. The oil was still sort of clear, there was no signs of oil being sprayed and the plugs looked fine. I called the guy and he assured me that he had just put the oil in and had not ran the motor much.
Since everything looks good and there is no signs of damage, should I be concerned? What other signs should I look for to determine problems that this may of caused? The guy will refund my money but I really want this motor and got a super buy on it and would like to keep it.

NO! that engine is fine, as long as the oil is at its normal level you will be fine. It might smoke a little bit the first time you fire it up. I have overfilled a Yamaha fx140 by 2 quarts and it never noticed a difference.

Better look for oil seal leaks, might pull the lower unit and see if there is oil on the shaft, overfilling a 4 stroke will cause it to blow seals, keep a close eye on the oil level and watch for oil film on the water when you stop. You might have lucked out and nothing got nailed, did you ring it out when you tried it out? Where it usally will show up first is the lower main seal.

We only ran it for about 5 minutes and not at full speed. Remember that it is a jet drive. Where would the oil seals be that might be leaking?

BR - if he had enough oil to burst the seals, the engine wouldn't of started, and he would of burnt the starter out trying to get the engine to turn over.

Thanks, you are making me feel better!! I've started the engine since draining some of the oil and all seems OK, it starts right up and runs smooth with no signs of any oil leaks

Does the oil have any gas smell to it?

Search on the Mercury fourm about "high oil level".

Several threads about high oil due to gas leaking past the piston rings because the engine was not broken in yet.

Ken
