This is an awfully long thread to establish that the needle has a blunt end--and is supposed to be that way. As you have already figured out, it would take something on the order of a roach bug to plug it up. Even then, you could open it up a turn and let him go on through. Well....OK, maybe not our big Florida roaches.
Think of the "needle" as a faucet. Screwing it in shuts off the water (gas). Screwing it out turns it on. Somewhere in the middle is "just right". It is not rocket science and probably is not the cause of your WOT problem.
