There are two thermostats. Follow the rubber hoses from the cylinder heads to the housing just below the large exhaust baffle plate (plate between the cylinder heads).

That housing is the thermostat and water bypass valve housing.

Sorry, I have no pictures, but the cylinder heads are the two large rectangular parts of the engine where the sparkplugs screw into. With the motor cover off and standing behind the motor, in between the cylinder heads is a large rounded cover. The tell-tale tube or pee tube comes from this cover. Otherwise it is fairly smooth. Just below this cover is a smaller rectangular cover about 6 inches long horizontally and 2 inches vertically. There will be a rubber hose about 1 inch in diameter coming from each end of this smaller cover and going to each of the cylinder heads. The thermostats are under this cover. It is difficult to remove and even more difficult to reinstall the thermostats and cover with the powerhead (engine block) still mounted because of the lower engine cowling (the part that has the 2 rear cowling locking handles). It can be done, but you must remove the 4 mounting screws that hold the lower cover in place. You cannot remove the lower cover without removing the powerhead. But, you can reposition it enough to access the bolts holding the thermostat cover. Watch out when you remove the thermostat cover. There are 2 spring loaded by-pass valves that will fly apart. Don't lose the parts. To put back together you will have to hold the springs and thermostats in place with plastic wire ties or something similar that can be removed once the cover bolts have been started. It will be very helpful to have a 1/4" socket set with a flex drive or universal drive adaptor.

As Molaker points out replacing them can be done but is a bit%h of a job the first time. I strongly suggest that you get the OMC shop manual and do a search here for tips. I have written my thoughts a couple of times.

(Thermostat Purpose)
(J. Reeves)

Many engines are considered high performance engines and demand a thermostat(s), and many smaller hp engines also require a thermostat for the following reason. The pistons actually distort/twist off round when running. The thermostat is required to keep the outer wall surrounding the steel cylinder, and the cylinder wall itself at a temperture to compensate for the distortion.

With the thermostat removed, the difference in temperture between the inside the cylinder and the water jacket quickly reaches a point whereas (in effect) you have a oblong piston running up and down a round cylinder, or vice versa. Bottom line is without the thermostat, the piston and cylinder wall could be damaged in a short period of time.

The thermostat in your car isn't there simply to have the heater function properly..... think about it.

No, you cannot use silcone. You must use the proper gaskets. Just tighten the bolts.

Do yourself a favor marcos and take your engine to a shop and get a marine technician finish the job. My take is that this job is way beyond your present level of understanding. This is a job that can be done by the driveway wrench but it is a bit complex and if not done right will need to be done again and again and - - - Read Molakers post very carefully and he gave you the short version. Good luck.
