1972 65 hspr. Evinrude. Having problem with the plug that links the electrical system of the motor with the outside system. It works sometimes and other times the motor won't do anything. I would bypass the plug and check the wires out while doing it, but figuring out which wire on one side of the plug goes with which wire on the other side could be quite a problem. Any suggestions.
Thanks
Skip

Re: Plug Problems

Hi Skip....a little more info would help Skip. What won't the engine do? Crank but won't start, won't crank at all....??

Do you have to work the connector a little to get it to go or does it just "decide" to go?

Re: Plug Problems

When the connection works, engine starts. When it doesn't nothing at all happens. Making the connection is just by chance, and when it does work, after a few times, it doesn't, so you can't depend on it if you were out on the water. Working the connector doesn't work, but taking it apart and reconnecting it does at times. That's why it seemed a good idea to connect it up directly, and check the lines with a testor.
Thanks,
Skip

Re: Plug Problems

Skip....next time it happens, see if you got 12V to the solenoid and it's picking up. Sounds like the ignition switch may be headed south. Also check all the battery connections are clean and tight at the battery and on the engine.

If you get 12V at the solenoid and you can't hear it pick up, smack it and see if that helps. Solenoid could be stuck. If the solenoid picks up and the engine don't crank, jump the two large posts on the solenoid with a screwdriver. If the engine cranks, solenoid bad.

And...if you jump the solenoid and the starter don't turn, maybe time for new brushes in the starter.

Re: Plug Problems

Vigerously clean bot the male & female contacts in the plug. They can get corroded & fail to make contact.
