Trying to find a replacement wire from distributor to coil on my 4.3 mercruiser. Is there a better brand to look for or do I have to rebuild the wire myself?

You can do what you want but I prefer OEM stuff. So Mercruiser/Quicksilver brand would be what I recommend.

Re: plug wire replacement

Hi there, you might be able to get away with using Mercruiser part number 84-815297A51, But i can't guarantee the leanth is exactly the one you need. So one of your best options of many would be to use your engine serial number and buy a complete OEM kit just for under $60.00 to be sure you get the correct length coil wire.

There are options available to make your own wire from an auto parts store but for best fit at the coil, your best bet would be to use Mercruiser part number 85-63709A1 boot/terminal kit.

What year or serial number is your engine?

I like the MSD wires on Summit. You can cut them to exact size and it's so easy, a cave man could do it. 7 seasons with them. :)

Re: plug wire replacement

It looks like it broke in half in the coil? But I just picked up a brand new set of plug wires from a MERCRUISER shop so it would be the set I needed, I took it to the water an fixed the fuse and all it would do is turn over and I checked to see if I was getting fire from the coil an I was. So now I'm good on the plug wire from coil to distributor but all the motor does is turn over, and advice?

Hi Box4879, this is a new question, and really doesn't relate to the original title. Best advice is to start a new thread, with all the relevant details (engine model, year, serial number, etc). That will get more members looking at it, and you'll get more replies. :)

Re: plug wire replacement

Looking at the diagram you posted is there anything that should stick out of the coil? Or does the coil wire plug slip over the top and just touch the inner walls?

Seems a little unusual, anyone working around the engine lately that my have accidentally unplugged anything important?

But I just picked up a brand new set of plug wires from a MERCRUISER shop so it would be the set I needed, I took it to the water an fixed the fuse and all it would do is turn over and I checked to see if I was getting fire from the coil an I was. What fuse was bad? The one by the engine starter?

Did you install just a new coil wire or did you do all new plug wires as well?

You will want to check that you are getting spark to both the distributor cap and the spark plug wires near the spark plugs.

Serial number 1A340674 is newer model Mercruiser 4.3L TKS alpha drive.

It was a hidden one right behind the distributor, you sent me a pic showing me. I only installed the coil wire, should I replace the others as well? ill have to check all the other plugs for spark I guess? Didn't think about that?

Sorry, once i posted my question i seen you had the Tahoe boat and remembered you had the hidden fuse.

Unless you find the plug wires to be damaged for any reason or you don't know the back history of the wires or the boat, then at this point i can't foresee a reason why you would need new plug wires already. Under normal circumstances they tend to last a long time.

But since the engine is just cranking over, you should verify that good spark is first coming out of the coil then ensure the plug wires are producing good spark as well. Remember you are in the testing/diagnostics stage right now, so knowing everything is essential right now.

One other thought would be maybe the engine became flooded with fuel. So after sitting a while it may try to start on it's own without pumping the throttle especially since your carburetor has a fuel enricher as part of the working system at key up as long as there is fuel in the fuel float bowl to begin with.

If floodings is the case, you could pull the spark plugs out and check them for excessive fuel or just leave the throttle full open for 10+ minutes to allow the excessive fuel to evaporate. But pulling the plugs is a better idea that way you know if it's the/A problem.
