Don't know why they are so expensive but there must be some reason, so I would not fool around with anything but OEM. Just IMHO. Good luck

Because they're marine, and because people will pay that much for them.

Buy a bulk roll of Taylor 8.2mm silicone wire, some terminal ends and a crimping tool...you'll have a better wire for less. No more than an hour's worth of labor to fit/cut/crimp.

True, but so are the wires for a 454 and they are less than $80 for the set. I would think there must be more to it than that.

Did some searching, and I think you are right and I am wrong. It appears that they are differ from the automotive wires only because the lengths, as they need to rout around the manifolds in a boat. Check out these, they might work: http://www.msdignition.com/info.aspx?taxid=10&taxid2=349

that amounts to about $90 a year if you change them every five. That is probably less than 20 gallons of gas. You probably burn more than that in an afternoon right? Seems to me that you are worrying way too much about it, so just change them with OEM and do the rest of the rubber next year and don't stress yourself out. Don't know why they are so expensive but there must be some reason, so I would not fool around with anything but OEM. Just IMHO. Good luck

She's not as bad on fuel as you would think. Lots of range on a 100 gal tank; 200+ miles if you leave 30 gallons in reserve. 14-16 gal/hr at cruise, so yea I used to burn that much fuel in an afternoon when we lived on a large lake. Not so much anymore.

You're right, no need to worry about it. It is what it is. Just about everything for the 496 costs twice as much (or more) than the previous gen big blocks anyway. $50 for a fuel filter was the first indication I got of this. I've seen it before, unfortunately.

Got 8.5 MM high performance silicone wires, Jegs brand (identicle to Accels), for around forty for the 454 motors. They have the S/S ends and heafty boots on them. Use dielectric grease when installing them. Just be carefull and make sure you get the ones with the correct ends, as there are a number of configurations available. Get the ones for headers as they tend to be a bit longer. Just need to make sure the routing isn't rubbing on anything to damage them. Worked perfectly this past season for me. Oh, and I used the NGK plugs too.
