I am looking for plug wires for a 1996 Mercury 90hp, 2-stroke, 3-cyl. The engine serial number is 0G422531. I think the part number for the wires is 84-813715A7. The wires I found appear to be OEM and around $50. I am trying to avoid that price if at all possible. Do you guys know of any aftermarket wires that will work? I thought about having someone make the wires. Does the wire have to be anything special? What MM is the wire? Thank you in advance for any info you can give me.

Gee, why do you need new wires? Break one? Wires last a long time....

Re: Plug wires.

OEM wires are on the way. I noticed one of the boots was cracked and as I tried to pull it off it tore. So, I figured I should go ahead and inspect all 3 wires. As I was removing one of the wires from the coil the brass end came off. The center core of this wire was not connected to the brass end. It is not even sticking out like the other two. It looks like it has corroded away. Also, the dielectric grease has dried out and will crumble off. I think these are the original wires from 1996. It doesn't appear it has ever had a good tune-up.

FYI: I say corroded because the center core is not there, it is gone. It didn't fall out and it is not still in the coil. The wire looks hollow and has that green looking stuff, like battery terminals get, all over the end and in the coil. The weird thing is it ran fine the last time I had it out. Thoughts on this???

Gee, normally OEM plug wires are stranded stainless steel. I had ones on my merc 1500 from new in 1977 until they went bad in the early 2000s. Even then the insulation was bad, not the conductor. I wonder if the PO replaced them with some automotive type he grafted in.

Re: Plug wires.

Chris1956, the more I look at these wires I am thinking the same thing. At first I thought they were the original wires but now I am having second thoughts. I am now leaning toward some shop making these wires. Maybe they didn't get the one wire crimped good because it pulled loose a little too easy. Could have torn up that boot trying to put it on. Do boat repair shops do that?

I can't find any factory specs on these wires but one site I was on said they were all 3 the exact same length. If that is true then mine probably not factory. There is over an inch difference.

I may track down the PO and see who did his repairs.
