What is the best way to plug holes in a transom?

My boat has a few holes in it from a previously mounted motor and what looks like a fish finder or such, a few screw holes and a few larger bolt holes.

On Shipshape TV they drill them out to the next size wooden dowel. Soak the dowel in epoxy and hammer it in to just below the surface, then cover with gelcoat and finish it flush.

I've filled some of mine with 5200 (from the inside out using a syringe) and others by filling the hole with MarineTex.

Hello RobandBob..

Whatever you plug the hole with ( Id use fiberglass putty ) I suggest you dish out slightly and put a few layers of glass.

Like those bolt holes..dish out about 3" round and 3 layers of mat.

Re: Plugging holes in transom

O.k. I picked up some Gelcoat repair down at the Marina, and tonight I plugged the holes in my transom with some wooden dowels and epoxy. I will prep and touch up with gelcoat tomorrow.
