Wow, glad I ran across this thread! My FIL has this situation where the vent pipe odors get really strong on the patio. Single level home, normal height vent (we call them stink) pipe, septic system.

Went on the roof and the odor over the pipe is astounding. Had septic systems all my life but never smelled a stink pipe THIS bad.

Those charcoal filters look cheap enough to risk trying. Heck I can get activated charcoal and build one myself...

That OdorHog filter looks like something I need to look at. Has anyone here ever used one of them?

id experiment with a 90 deg elbow, faced into the wind. it should stop the venturi effect that sucks the odors out of the pipe.

I agree the smell is coming from the vent pipes. However...if you try to extend the vents keep this in mind...most vent pipes have a lead "boot" around it. The top of the boot is rolled over the top of the pipe to the inside. This is how the roof is sealed around the pipe. Should you decide to extend the pipes you will need to seal the lead boot or you will have a leaky roof issue when it rains.

I hope that makes sense.

Re: Plumbing Wisdom Needed

Sewer gas is heavier than air and will settle on the roof and fall to the ground. This condition is worst ON CALM DAYS!! Extending the vent stack will not remedy this effect. The two options are filters which work very well or eliminate the roof vents all together. The second option is the most effective but the most expensive.

exactly bigdee, sewer gases are heavier than air, therefore , under normal circumstances there should be no odor from the vent pipe. but with wind blowing over the pipe ( which is probably being compounded by the shape of the op's home), there is a venturi being created, and the heavier than air gas is being sucked out of the vent, in exactly the same way as a carb works with a running engine as it pulls fuel from the float bowl. stop the verturi effect and the smell should go away.

Vent stacks release odor because of POSITIVE pressures that are created (along with negative pressures)by the dynamics of waste flowing in the drainage system. On windy days these odors are usually scattered and carried away except on damp days or down drafts. On a calm day that occasional puff of sewer gas from the vent is what settles to the ground.

Re: Plumbing Wisdom Needed

ok simple.
i havnt read the whole threat yet decided to post this b4 i forget.
the roof vent only needs to suck air in to help the flow of water down the line from the sinks and showers and dunny.
i know from watching the canadian Holmes, is there is a vent cap that has a one way valve in side it. this will stop gasses coming out yet let the air go in :)

just found this for you...

Adapter allows solvent welding to 1-1/2in or 2in schedule 40 PVC pipe or threads into 2in FIP fitting.
For use as a secondary vent. Complies to ANSI/ASSE 1051 A&B.

SURE-VENT

This is what I have on my house instead of the roof vents. They work very well and you don't have all those ugly pipes sticking out of the roof....and no odors. I have had them for 10 years without any problems. They can be concealed under sinks and vanities and plumbed into the trap line.

Umm yeah.. not a good idea to install under a sink or vanity. you can by all means do so, however........
its best to have a vertical run, if only an extra 2 or 3 feet. if you do get a blockage, this will allow both the vent and the sink to fill just that lil bit more b4the sink spills over onto your floor(depending where anyblockage may occur.
but they are a great idea. i will ask a mate of mine who is a plumber.
