I am going to be making two openings amidships either side of the hull a few inches under the gunwale. I will be installing louvered vents in these openings to ventilate the bilge and engine compartment.
I know I need to support the gunwale and the opening by backing the opening. I was thinking of glassing the backer in rather than simply gluing it to the back side of the hole for support. Is this overkill?
Also I know I need to use marine ply. However I have hardwood boards available. Should I find some marine ply, or go with hardwood? 3/4"?
