Plywood & Resin

I am restoring a 1985 areocraft mach 2, I see it will need a new deck but I think it will need a complete restore ( stringers ) but right now I am building a engine cover and I have hardwood plywood 2 sided. I resined the wood and 12 hours later it is still tacky I put plenty of hardener in it could the wood have some wetness in it ? if I put another coat on it will it harden up?
This is a great fourm I see a lot of info I will need to do this restore but am a rookie on fiberglass & resin I hope someone can tell me If I did something wrong.

What type of resin, polyester or epoxy?

How tacky, just a sticky surface, or still liquid?

Did the resin in the container and the brush get hard?

I am using poly and its been 14 hours and is still tacky it looks like it will eventual dry. The brush and container is rock hard 1/2 hour after use.
Again I am a rookie, I was hoping to just seal the wood .

Resin needs wax added to it for the surface to cure tack free, because contact with air will inhibit the cure.

Resin alone does a poor job of sealing wood, it can be brittle and weak without glass, so if this needs to be waterproof you'll need to do more.

so I guess I should get some mat and apply to wood to make it waterproof
and get some resin with wax in it or what can I do to get this resin to cure

The current layer of resin on the wood is very thin, this slows the cure dramatically and without heat may not lose its tack. If you plan to go over it with glass the tack is a good thing. You shouldn't need wax in the resin for the future glass work, on a thicker laminate the tack normally goes away in a few days.

Hello Junky..and welcome to Iboats..

Just out of curiosity..when you say you put " Plenty of hardener in it " .. what is plenty ? .. how much did you mix up ? .. a Quart ? and .. if it was more or less could you tell me how many CC's of What hardener per quart.

And where and what kind of poly resin did you use ? Low Voc or simple Boat Yard resin ?

I really cannot tell you what your problem is without being there or knowing simple answers to these silly questions .. but it does make a difference m8..
