What does everyone do with their pocket change?

I do not spend it and I just collect it in a large tupperware container. When I get bored I sort it into huge cranberry juice jugs and seperate the quarters between state quarters and old quarters.

About 18 months ago I rolled what I had and cashed it in prior to a vacation and cashed in $685 in coins!

I even have my wife saving in a plastic piggy bank I got her. As soon as she fills it she rolls it and it is usually $50-60.

Oh .... :D if you think there is a penny shortage  don't panic I have a full gallon jug of them that I have just not rolled!

I ended up having to buy a change counter/roller. New bank wont take unrolled coins. I usually turn them in around 3 - 400 bucks worth.

I save coins in a coffee can. When spring arrives I will have a whole season's worth of toll money for my weekend trips to Maine.

Lets see, our saved coins have gotten us a used 35mm canon eos camera and this year my wife rolled $250 dollars worth for black friday shopping. Saving your change is an easy way to save a little money.

It goes in a jar on top of the fridge & supplements the kid's school lunch money. Then every now and then I roll it and hit the bank & apply it to whatever I might be saving for.

Use VERY little cash. Any change goes in the cup on the fridge, after about 6 months I'll take to the bank and use the FREE change counter for customers. Usually only about $30 in there.

I have one 3 liter wine jug full and a couple of inches of coins in the bottom of a second one.

No idea how much is there, but 40 years ago I bought a SportYak II with the content of a couple of pipe tobacco cans. I think that was about $200. in 1965 dollars.

I have no plans for this hoard. I will just let it grow until something tells me what to do with it.

The future Mrs. QC and I used all of her saved up coins as about half of our down payment on our first boat.

Now, I know that some of you will cringe that we financed a new boat when we were a) young (I was 23, she 21), b) stupid, c) inexperienced, d) unmarried etc. etc. Fact is we have not looked back and have now owned three. Moral of the story? Who knows? Save your coins and leverage them into a huge debt when you are young. You'll never regret it!!!

I had a "Water Cooler" jug, nearly full..It was too heavy to move & fell apart when we tried to move it. It had a little over 3K in it!.....JK

I throw mine into quart jars until I am in a bind or just want some extra cash. Works out great! Empty the pocket every day.

Almost never have cash anymore, therefore no pocket change. If I anticipate needing cash I have to stop and figure out how to use and ATM or get to the bank. Just the way things are these days..online bill payments, debit/crdit card etc

I used to save my change and use it for gas money back in the day. I have been using the debit card for everything now, so I might accumulate $10 in a year now.

Re: Pocket Change - Coins

We haven't spent a single penny since my daughter was born. Pennies go into piggy banks for all of the kids, then into a savings account for them when they get older. Get them a start with the saving thing. They like counting them and taking them to the bank.

I think over the last 5 years they have around $50 in the bank now for all 3 of them. Not bad for only pennies. Any silver coin that goes into their pigy bank usually comes back out right away for milk or bread towards the end of the pay period.

When I was a kid we took family vacations every year. Since we were poor growing up we kept our change and used that for vacation every year.

Might want to get a copy of the numismatic news prior to taking it to the bank some of the state quarters are getting a little valuable. Could double you return.

I have a moonshine type jug I fill and once every couple of years I remove the silver and extract $500 or so.
Imagine what it costs the treasury to have all the pennies in circulation that are not in use. It obviously costs more than a penny to make a penny.
Too bad its not easier to get rid of them.

I ALWAYS pay with cash, and rarely use any change to pay for things, so I get quite a bit. I put it into rolls and stack it up...I think I have around $500 right now. Whenever I want to buy something but know I really shouldn't, I think, "it's ok, I'll just spend the quarters"...but then I never get around to taking them to the bank, even though I bought whatever it is I shouldn't have. :D

No, it cost them less than a penny to make each one, that's why they switched to copper plated zinc in 1983. Before that, the price of copper went way up and pennies were worth more melted down then as a penny...so that's what people did.

Re: Pocket Change - Coins

Mine use to vanish right before my step daughter had plans to go out with friends etc..so I stopped holding onto my change (except pennies). Just heard a "spare Change" Saving plan provided by my bank...any transaction that you use your debit card for will be rounded to the next higher dollar and the difference will be put in a saving account. Neat idea...for all us "I don't use cash for anythign anymore" people.

-JMW
