What defines a pocket cruiser? I'm guessing it is a 24-29 foot vessel with cabin etc. Anybody hear that term?

I would guess it is smaller than that, but I guess it depends on who is making a reference. To me, a pocket cruiser is a 15 foot runabout, but to a gazillionare a pocket cruiser would be a 50 foot yacht. I am guessing it is probably like you say, the express cruisers in a mid 20 foot range.

Re: Pocket Cruisers

I have heard of this term and I understand it to mean a trailerable boat, of modest horsepower to meet the criteria of a cruiser, not performance, that has amenities to allow for overnight or weekend type trips. Ex. Head, sink, 1-2 burner stove and an icebox. I refer to boats of lower profile and usually with few if any cabin windows, not usually more than a 9 foot beam and capable of better than cabin cruiser speed but less than high performance type speed. The genre usually means to me a length of somewhere between 20-30ft in length. Reggie Fountain probably has a slightly different discription.

Re: Pocket Cruisers

But, in one of my "Yachting" magazines they show a 32 footer, I think made in Australia, loaded with features "like those on much larger boats",,,,, And they use the word "Pocket Cruiser" in the article's title, and they mention it a few times in the article as well.

So until seeing this post I was assuming they were small cruisers, but I was thinking 30-35 foot range, with full amenities.

May be one of those "in the eye of the beholder" type deals......

While looking up boat plans, the pocket cuisers were usually under 20 ft.

Re: Pocket Cruisers

Hi all, I am very new to the boating world...guess that make me an ordinary seaman here.
Anyway I just bought an old boat...problem is I don't know the Hull, or Class or any thing or even how to measure the thing...
Now I know this is useless info but I need your help...
This is what I know...I think its a pocket cruiser

IT HAS a VOLVO V8 engine with a 4 barrel holley
IT has a sterndrive
It has a tiny cabin with a head under the cushions of the beds.

Any advice where to begin...?
How do I know if its a pocket cruiser, size, hull/class?

That's the criteria I've generally heard applied to "pocket cruisers" also. In my neck of the woods, I own one :)

If you want help idetifying your boat, you should start your own thread instead of hijacking someone else's. Measure the boat, post a picture, make and model, and folks here will help you out.

Re: Pocket Cruisers

Pocket cruiser as defined by Wikipedia:

A pocket cruiser, microcruiser, trailer sailer or pocket yacht is a small lightweight sailboat with a cabin, designed for recreational cruising. Pocket cruisers can be readily loaded on a trailer and towed by most passenger automobiles. Both commercially made and designs for home built pocket cruisers are available. In spite of its name, this type of vessel is completely unrelated to the pocket battleship.

More info at the link.

I"ve always referred to the powered cruisers as defined in the other posts as sport cruisers.

Huh! First time I ever heard the definition limited to a sailboat...

Maybe I actually own a pocket battleship??

Welcome to iboats, redeye!

Posting the HIN (hull identification number) would be a good place to start in getting the information you need.

That sounds more like a Cuddy Cabin like my Wellcraft than it does a pocket cruiser.

I would lean towards POINTER94's definition of a pocket cruiser. Basically a trailerable Express Cruiser. V-berth forward, mid-berth under the cockpit, enclosed head and a galley. Put that on a 8 1/2 foot beam and it's a 'Pocket" Cruiser.

JoLin's Chris Craft 240 Express would be a prime example.

I am so sorry for hijacking the thread everyone ... its just that like I said I am new and didn't know where to begin...that is to say what category, how to post new topics, how to measure, 'a hulk id' number...?huh? anyway I still have no idea...
But my humblest apologies for bad forum etiquette and for all those who were offended by my question to an old post that caught my eye.

I will try elsewhere.
(Thanks all for warm welcomes)

I guess that means that we can add power boats to it.:D

LMAO!!! I'm guessing a pocket cruiser when this thread started is a little different than a pocket cruiser now.

FWIW, around here a pocket cruiser generally means a trailerable (beam 8'6") cruiser in the low 20' range.

Hey Redeye, you say that you are new to boating? That makes your boat type easy to identify. It is a memory maker. Maybe a learning curve or a money pit too. Any way you look at it, it is yours and have fun!
