I have a 1956 Lightwin 3.0 h.p. and would appreciate advice regarding the proper procedure for setting point gap. In what position should the throttle lever be when lining up the cam timing mark and block on the points. Full throttle? Is it the same for each set of points?

Re: Point Gap Adjustment

On this little engine, find the high spot on the cam by rotating crankshaft. Set point gap at .020 at this point. These engines are very forgiving about point gap, as to there running ability

R Johnson:

Thanks for your response. I under stand the rotating shaft etc., but doesn't the position of the throttle lever (armiture position) make a diffence in engine timing when setting the point gap? Or can the point gap be set with the armiture in any position.

Re: Point Gap Adjustment

You can set point gap with the magneto plate (armature) in any position. When the engine is running, point gap, or dwell has an effect on timing to a certain degree. Timing has no effect on point gap. When you set the point gap, what you are doing is static timing the engine. At the front of the mag. plate, there are two vertical marks about 3/8" apart. On the flywheel there are two vertical marks 180 degrees apart, or one mark for each set of points. Were you to hook a timing light to the engine with it running, you would see the mark on the flywheel fall between the two marks on the mag. plate, this would be optimum timing. You would make this check on both plug wires to check both sets of points. Setting the points with a feeler guage at .020 will put you very close to this ideal setting.

The highest point, the spot for setting the points, is to have the crankshaft key aligned with the fiber rubbing portion of the points.

DHP.... Yep, that holds true excepting the few slide on ignition cams that have the word "set" inscribed on them.
