Hi All! I am a newcomer and found lots of valuable information on this site! I have a 1987 Merc. 3.0L, S/N 0B647030, and I am interested in finding out the point gap and timing specs. From the Mercruiser service manual #10 (Delco Distributor) they list the point gap at 0.022" and the timing at 6 deg. BTDC. However, I was reading some old posts where they mention Merc. service bulletin #95-11, which states the point gap at 0.016" and the timing at 8 deg. BTDC. It appears as if this is for a Prestolite Distributor (replacement for Delco's??). Are these specs a function of the distributor type? If so, how do I know which distributor I have? I am the new owner of the used boat, so I don't have much history on the engine.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

I believe the point specs are .018 to .023. I was told this by a local mechanic but you will get more input

I have a 88 mercruiser 3.0 L and my book says to have it at .022". Seems to run pretty good there, havn't heard of anything to give her less gap but im sure you can exp. on the water and see.

Let us know what you find,

Big-E

The Delco distributor looks like this.

The cap for the Prestolite distributor looks like the one below, only with 4 wires.....Couldn't find a picture of the 3.0L Prestolite distributor.

Thanks Guys! It looks like I have the Delco, not the Prestolite and I will use the specs from the Merc. service manual then. Got her finished last night and will take it on the "maiden" voyage this weekend. I appreciate the help.

-Jeff
