I got a 1957 Johnson 10hp (QD-18) motor runs awesome, but at low speed it like misfires or fires out of time, the motor will jerk when it does this. used to do this occaisionally, now it is doing it very often this year. I also noticed that when it does this it blows hard into the tank pressure line. I was going to replace the points and condensers, but havent been able to find them. I looked on i-boats and also sierra, but the sierra site is hard to find stuff without a part#. I was also thinking that it could possibly be the plug wires, maybe jumping from one to the other since the are so close. Anybody know if the wires are replaceable, or if I gotta get new coils to do that? I've had this motor and used it every summer for 12 years. never had a problem, always starts on the first pull. But the jerking is getting bad. So give me some feedback if you would please. Also if you know points gap. thanks.

Sounds to me like it's running lean, have you pulled the carbs and given them a good clean recently, if you have try, turning the low speed mixture needle anti clockwise a little at a time until the jumping stops.

If the carbs haven't been cleaned for a while use the red search feature "cleaning carb".

I deleted my post...but I looked at IBoats, and could not find what you found originally. But just as a caution, those points are not like any in my 50's 5 horse TNs'. But probably OK for a 10 maybe..of course maybe a generic picture. But what the heck do I know? Thats why I hang here!

gap is 0.020 but this is a 9 year old thread mg. if you have more questions, you should really start a fresh thread , it keeps things easier for members to help out.
