I have a 1961 18HP Evinrude Fastwin Model 15034
What should the ignition points be set at?
I guess the point gap stting is also the timing for this engine?

Re: Points Gap?

0.020" gap. Yes, the gap sets the timing for the most part. Another important part of the timing is to set the carb roller to touch the throttle cam exactly at the mark on the throttle cam. This sets your timing advance.

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubbing portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

NOTE 1: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.

NOTE 2: Should the cam have the word TOP imbossed on the top of it, that is a cam that could be installed upside down and this is simply telling you which side is up. It is not a position where one would set the points.

Re: Points Gap?

Not sure if your motor is like the one I am working on...

If you are setting the points with the flywheel removed, and your cam has a spring under it, make sure the cam is depressed down enough for the points to properly contact the cam surface. I learned this when my points just refused to contact the cam surface. All I did was depress the cam and it would stay snug enough to set the points. Then Id depress it again to set the other side. If your cam wont stay depressed you may have to reinstall the flywheel so that it pushes down against the cam and gives you the proper setting. Hope this helps
