What was that old 5.5 in there for up front? Insurance or another test motor? :D:D

Liked it!

That 1962 Fisherman was both. I needed to set up the carb on it. Plus, I seldom travel without a second motor when I'm by myself especially with an unproven motor like that Big Twin. It was only the second time I've had it out and I'm still getting the bugs out. It seems to want more fuel at start up than the best running carb settings will allow. Beautiful runner when warm, but a bit tempermental cold.

Well WB,
If that ol' 25 keeps on idling bad when cold, you ought to just send it to me--I'll pay shipping, even.
My '57 18hp Johnson with that weedless prop ran 25mph today on my new boat, 21mph with me and my dad--He goes about 250lbs. and I'm about 210. Not too bad after all. I still haven't got the lower unit sealed perfectly, though.

JB,

I've run the 25 hp a few times now. It just needs a little choke until it starts to warm up. Then its clear sailing - so to speak. However, I'm in the process of selling/trading it. Lots of offers to trade, but the best deal so far is $300 cash.

Update - just sold for $300.

Re: Poll - How quick do your old outboards push?

Beaton,
Tell me you didn't REALLY sell that 25 for 300 bucks. A '56 30hp just sold on ebay for 470 dollars and I bid 365 on it myself! I would have jumped on your evinrude 25 for 300 dollars.... someone got a great buy. Why did you sell that thing? Is it that easy in your area to find one that they only go for 300 bucks? Shoot, if I know you it was running better than it did out of the showroom. Don't all of 'em need a little choking before they warm up?
I'm totally disappointed.
I could tell that old evinrude wanted to fly south to my house!
BTW--I'm going to try to get that '58 parts manual scanned in this week--I don't know how to do it but the secretary does:D:D.

Lots of them up here. You forget I'm surrounded by thousands of fresh water lakes and I'm only 2 hours from OMC's former Canadian plant. These old motors are easy to find and hard to sell. I paid $80 for it and it already had a brand new ignition. The mag just wasn't installed properly. All I did was re-install the mag, cleaned the carb (not that it needed it) and set it up on my boat.

I could have held out for more, but I'd have sat on it for a long time too. I was glad to be rid of it. It was taking up room in my basement. I already have a 1954 Big Twin Electric and a 1956 Javelin. Paid $75 for the 25 hp and $50 for the 30 hp. If I see another I'll give you a heads up.

No hurry on the manual.

I just bought a '67 Starcraft 15' aluminum closed bow runabout ("Star Fire") with the original Big Twin 40. After getting some good advice from you all here on these boards I fired it up today and ran a timed mile on the Muskingum River -- 1 m. 55 sec., or 31.25 mph. One 220 lb boat jockey on board ( I hate it when people on shore yell "hey looka the head on that thing" when I go by), 3 gal. gas, trolling mtr., two batteries, 40 degrees outside, banged up original old white propeller with the pointy center cap.

Re: Poll - How quick do your old outboards push?

1972 mercury 9.8 hp. -----21.2 mph by GPS on a 12 ft boat with me(210lbs), 2 shotguns, 4 ducks, and 1 shell bucket and tank of gas.

Forgot to test speed with gps, but, my "old" '57 johnson 18hp I just tested with new coils and rebuilt carb on the same 12 foot boat as above with this exception--I used the prop that I have for an 18hp that is not "weedless" and that rascal was SMOKIN' down the channel. I can't wait to test it with my GPS, may just do it today if I can. Also, there's a 2-blade light load prop NOS on ebay that I want to buy. It ought to GO FAST on my little 12 footer if I can get it.:)

Re: Poll - How quick do your old outboards push?

I was just given an old beat-up 14ft 32inch bottom duracraft boat. I tested my '72 9.8 merc and '75 7.5hp merc. on it and was very pleased. 9.8 merc was 21.4 mph., 7.5hp merc was about 16mph. In the past the 7.5hp merc would hardly plane my 12ft, 42inch wide boat and was very slow. It was much faster today on the 14' 32"bottom boat. The 14 ft boat also jumped on plane easier and ran faster and smoother. I think that was the problem as to why I wasn't getting the speed other folks were getting with their 7.5hp outboards (12ft boat). With the 14 ft. boat it's much faster.

Re: Poll - How quick do your old outboards push?

When I first purchased my 10' shallow Aluminum Jon, I bought a 1963 Johnson Lightwin 3HP weedless. That motor was gutless, even on that small boat, running at 7MPH.
I sold the Lightwin, and replaced it with a 1979 Johnson 6HP, and that motor would plane the boat if you put the 6gallon gas tank in the front, my GPS read 16-17MPH.

Also had a 89 Bayliner 17.5" Capri with a 85HP Force, 22-23 at WOT

My Current Bass Tracker pro-17 with a '93 Evinrude 40HP does 28-29 at WOT 5200RPM. Need to find a 60HP, and it think the boat will really boogie.

LOL

Twin 89 Merc High Performance 2.5L's turning Mazco 30 cleavers went over 120mph on Lake Pleasant outside Phoenix. Test boat was my 97 21' Eliminator Daytona before I bought it. I'm pretty sure it was planed. ;P Hearsay of course, but from what info I have on the boat I believe it can do it

Re: Poll - How quick do your old outboards push?

I'd be afraid it would "plane" right on up in the air!:D Sounds like a fun rig.....How'd you measure the speed? GPS or a really high speedometer?

By the way, my "High performance" '55 7.5 hp went 14.4 mph wide open with my 65lb. son in the boat running it (14ft. aluminum hull). On straight pump gas mixed 24:1. No turbo. Aren't you jealous?
Here's a pic of the near light-speed adventure.:)

You need to post a pic of that rig in action!
