Re: Poll: Track Restoration Costs?

Keep in mind I started this project "needing" to do this on the cheap.

Deck: $70 (including lumber, ss screws, all/weather carpet, glue, etc)
Paint:
- $60 (Interlux)
- $20 (marine primer)
- $15 sanding products
Motor:
- $25 carb kit
- $75 new cables (shift & throttle)
- $12 impeller
- $25 tune up (local shop specializing in really old OB's like my '61 Johnson)
- $20 gas tank (6gal)
- $11 fuel line & bulb
- NEED new electric starter. No aftermarket...so rebuild. UGLY, pull start now
Battery: $80 (didn't skimp...wanted reliability)
Electrical:
- $24 fuse bus/terminal (wanted to clean up everything)
- $12 all new wires (bow to stern)
- $18 battery cables
Seats:
- $35 Butt seat & ped. (for fishing)
- NEED back-to-back seats (new = $150/pc. or used ~$60/pair)
Steering:
- NEED new steering wheel (retro look) $_??
- NEED update to Telflex ~$125

I've spent about $500 so far. I'm looking at another $500 ahead of me...besides normal wear & tear fixes.

Here's where I am today (attached).

Wes

I just through the money in the hole and don?t look back. No sense in tracking, I?m not selling it. Beats $400.00 a month in payments on a new boat that?s old when its paid off. As far as my wife goes, I think she would prefer the payments on a new boat so I wouldn?t be spending the time with my clunker.

I just looked at it like, I can buy a cheap boat, fix it up, and PROBABLY have spent the same or more than I would've finding a boat in 'decent' shape. However, the one in decent shape could be hiding all sorts of things, or the things I restored on mine, would've needed restoring that much sooner, might as well get it all done in one shot! I have 4k+ into mine now, but it looks great, the maintenance is all done, new deck/transom, and I know a lot about the boat in general. I could've easily bought a newer boat that was in ok shape for 4k, but the deck/transom/interior wouldn't be brand spanking new!

Re: Poll: Track Restoration Costs?

I am with you all, sure I could buy a used boat for about what my resto is going to cost...but if done right you really have a new boat, built just like you want it, for the price of a used one. Plus I got a deal on mine...300 on the whole shebang including a 115 evinrude with tilt trim....was winterized in 98 but hadn't run.....bout 4 hours of working on it and keeping my fingers crossed and it fired right up.....so thats a good deal there already.

Plus.....working on stuff is fun, yes even grinding fiberglass!

I keep a rough idea....but I am not that anal about finances. If I can get the thing on the water for under 3k...I am happy, so far its looking to come in around 1500 ish, so I should be in good shape.

Re: Poll: Track Restoration Costs?

My dad and I teamed up back in December and bought 2 boats at an auction for $4500. We sold one this spring for $4000. With a few repairs, new battery, alternator kit, etc. and things like rod holders we have about $1500 into it.

While fueling up the boat to go fishing yesterday the guy beside me had a boat trailer...his brand new $40,000 21' Regal with a 5.7 L Volvo Penta was broke down at the lake and he was going to have to drag it across the lake, load it by hand and take it back to the dealer because the mechanics who went out to fix it had no idea what was wrong with it....I love my old Silverline.

I keep track of mine because i dont want to invest more money then its re sale value. With the price i paid and the money for the resto I have a total of just shy of 9k. It has really helped and I will be about 1500 under that 9k.

Re: Poll: Track Restoration Costs?

I have been keeping track of money spent for a few reasons. 1- If I decide to sell it I can say all day long things are new or have been replaced however with receipts my word is backed up. 2- If I have any warrenty problems with a part or a part goes bad and I need to replace it I have a record of where I bought it and what it cost. 3- I do not have a "budget" however I am trying to make the boat better than original and stay under what a nice original is selling for. Again this will help if I decide to sell it.

I have a 3 ring binder for each of my vehicles and the boat. I place all receipts in the binder and also when I am searching for parts and find something that I know I will need down the road at a good price I will print out the webpage and place it in the binder for when I need to buy the parts. This also gives me a good price base incase I come across the same part someplace else I can price compare.

If you can do the work yourself, materials are a wash as far as I am concerned. If you have to pay someone, that's a totally different story!

Re: Poll: Track Restoration Costs?

I have kept all of the receipts even the nickle - dime ones so that
eventually if I want to know how much I spent I can tell. I bought
this boat for a steal a couple of years ago - did some fixing up
on it - go lots of use out of it for 2 years so it didn't really owe me
anything, but I owed it for fixing me up when I needed fixing. The
experience has been great and if I can learn one new thing a day
from you guys and this boat I figure it is worth every dime I spend on it.:)
