I have been reading that I can use white wheat flour as a thickener in the Polyresin. Has anyone used this before? How does it stand up compared to Sawdust?

I'm sorry I can't help you with your specific question, but was wondering about something along similar lines. I was wondering about using fiberglass grinding dust. Most of us have no shortage of that! Oh and bump :) .

I did and it makes it very rough when it cures and makes it hard to lay glass over it. I was not impressed. It should be used as a last resort.

grinding dust is contaminated....possibly with wax.....and this will ruin the matrix.

a bucket of milled fibers or cabosil is only 5 bux.....and avalable at any corner fiberglass shop.......why re invent the wheel?

I did try the flour and it work out so so. Took a bit to dry though and could have been that I didn't put just enough hardener in it. I have used the saw dust and that has done great. Cabosil was almost a waste to me so light and took so much to achieve what I needed. Damn air blew it all around also. I did try one thing was to take mat Fiber glass and use a mortar and pestal and ground that crap up a bit, yes messy but it worked like a champ.

something smells fishy here folks......

lets get you on track.....

how are you mixing the materials that the "air blew the stuff around"..... and if you are using polyester resin....what rate are you mixing the mekp at?.
these details are very important to have a strong product.

and what are you using this mix for?....is this a structural filler...or a fillet...or a filler that is intended to be sanded?

Roger on the grinding dust. Just a thought.

I really need to find a good local fiberglass suply store or order online from us composites. Tap Plastics is killing me. 15 bucks for a two pound tub of milled. 13.50 for a lb of chopped. A 2oz tub of cabosil is 10 bucks.

*hint* 50/50 mix of cabosil to resin ratio is about right ..

What is the application for your mix ?

Re: Poly Resin Filler Alternative.

geezi wish i know more about the fiberglass stores in the states.....in canada they are all over.

i live in a small town and there are 3. two deal with the public and one is a supplier...another makes resin.

i can t see why suppliers would be so hard to find in the states....i think ordering off the net and waiting 10 days for a really expensive bucket of cabosil is crazy !

I see on the USComposites site that you can use talcum powder and it is very cheap.
