Can eirther a polyester, or epoxy resins be used to cover a new plywood deck (just the decking, all sides). I know they say an epoxy resin is better, But what are the real differences? Do they harden the same? Obviously it won't be below the water line, how much strenth does the "actual" deck need. When I replaced a couple of stringers, I did use an epoxy with glass. And do I need to fiberglass, or is a good resin enough, let it cure, and cover it all with a vinyl marine flooring. Thanks, Mark

Lota Questions there Mark,......
Ayuh,... Sure Can,.....
Polyester is a "Casting Resin",...... Designed to be Cast in a Mold.......

Epoxy is a Glue,... That's also a Resin...... It STICKS............
And do I need to fiberglass, or is a good resin enough, let it cure,
Basically,.........
Unsupported Resins have No Strength,......

There would be some support from the wood itself,... But I'd throw down a layer of Glass Anyway...........
Once you get the Resins out,........
It Ain't That much more Work.............

You said epoxy resin sticks, and I understand its a glue, but what gives polyester resin its ability to stick to the wood and glass if its not some sort glue,, ok,, "sticky substance"? But as long as I can use it, thats what matters. One of the reasons I ask these questions is because I bought 5 Gal. of it.

If you want it to last a long time use epoxy. Its stronger and is a lot more water resistant than poly. Use a layer of cloth to lend a bit of strength and wear resistance too.

Only reason poly is used is because its cheap.

dude,, all that work, time an money.. an you're goin' to use smething's inferior..

poly resin is not a glue..altho sticky when mixed,, doesn't bond well to wood an espcially plywood..

it lets rot causing water molecues to pass thru like a sive.. epoxy does not..
