alright got my steering console in the mail today (have to send it back cause ups beat it up pretty bad) but anyway i have the rotory cable style steering, now my questions are can i trim some of the cable off? and is there any disadvantage to mounting the steering in sideways so it will fit in the console? you may have to check out the console to see what i am talking about

Sorry to hear about ya console, But cutting the steering cable off at the front end of it wouldn't be a good idea, Cause it mite start unthreading on ya then would really mess it up an start jaming the rotory on ya,, But somebody else mite know more,,

You would have to shortent the housing too and the ends are factory so no, you can't cut it.

Witht he rotary set up you shouold be able to get it in any way you want, it will just take alot of dinking with the cable in and out to get the steering wheel lined up straight but sideways is fine.

How much extra cable do you have?

i am looking at 6+ inches, i ve turned the wheel both ways to see ho much it needs one way and marked it and turned it the oppesite way. there really doesnt appear to be anything special about that cable as far as the end goes (there is no cap or anything to keep it from becoming frayed other then the spring that wraps around it) what do you mean shorten the housing (the cable feeds into a circular looking gear box that the steering wheel itself turns) i will take some pics to day to show what i mean

That spring you talking about Virg is what the rotory gear pulls to make the steering works, I have not tryed to cut em down any an mine has a tube on that part to keep the dirt, water, an stoff off so nothing will build up on the cable to make it jam up in the rotory, All of em should have it, I did think about cuttin mine but just left it like it is, Just make sure nothing is in the way of it as it moves an if ya don't have the tube for it then make sure it won't be hitting any wires cause hot an ground wires don't mix to good,,lol, POOF,,

i took pics but forgot to to bring the sim card to work to post them, but after lookin at it again i ll need every bit i can take, as it appears it will hit the inside of the console, after some measurements the most i can take off is about 4 1/2 inches, the fuse panel will be mounted on the oppesite side.

ok here are the pics, notice the piece of duct tape i put on there to show how much the cable moves, and there is no cap, any reason why i shouldnt trim?

Great thread vergil, I've never seen this discussed befor, I'm learning something new this morning. Does anyone know if the cable is wrapped around a spool inside of the metal case?

FWIW, I'd avoid cutting it until you're absolutely positive you don't need it, for me, that means a few trips out on the water this summer. Could you fabaricate a simple tube for it to move in and out of? That would keep it from rubbing against anything else.

you may find that pex tubing used for water lines will work, it is stout yet somewhat flexible....more so than pvc.... another thought is copper tubing... as you can solder or braze mounts to the copper tubing to hold it in position.
