Pontoon covers

I'm trying to find a cover for my pontoon boat. I'm looking for a cover that I can leave on while towing down the highway. I bought one last summer and the add said it was good for towing. That was not worth a crap. Either the D-ring or straps kept breaking.

This past week while driving home, I saw two pontoons being towed and both had tight fitting covers. No billowing, just a good tight fit. It looked like they were probably made specifically for those boats and possibly had snaps all the way around???? I don't know, any suggestions on where to get a good fitting cover? Can one be found without breaking the bank? Thanks

Re: Pontoon covers

There's just no way a universal fit (aka semi-custom) style can be adequately secured for towing, even with additional straps. I wouldn't tow a barge with anything but a custom or factory cover. They are spendy, anywhere from three to five times the cost of one off the shelf, but they pay for themselves quickly. My barge came with a Sunbrella cover that was factory matched. It's ten years old and I can still tow with it. Doesn't take long to do the math on that one.;)

Ok, got the cover in and it *does* cover the pontoon but is real loose everywhere and I'm going to have to get a couple of stands to put under it to keep the water from pooling. Don' t think I'd even attempt to tow with it on. I could probably tighten it down enough if I had the stands in there to tow, but would be worried about it slapping around and wearing the finish off the boat if I did so. I must say, its a decent cover for the price, but not near as nice as a custom fit one from the manufacturer (although its 1/5th the cost).

Re: Pontoon covers

Just tow the pontoon without a cover. My .02

Yep, I think that's what I'll do for now. I'm eventually going to buy a custom fit cover as Incoop suggested. I'll just save my nickels and dimes and stay out of BPS for awhile. I can't go in there without droping two or three hundred bucks at a time. :D

Well there ya go. A couple of foregone BPS excursions and you're covered (pun intended).;)
