hello, i am building a small project on the back of my boat. kind of like a sundeck, but a little different... i am customizing to my needs... anyway i own a 1992 weeres 20' pontoon and am trying to find out how thick the railing is so i can buy the same square tubing for my project. i know it is 1 inch by 1 inch, but how thick... 1/8, 1/16, etc... i am going to be using a lot of aluminum and i want it to be safe and sturdy, but not overboard due to the pricing factor.

Re: pontoon railing thickness?

Welcome to iboats.

It is probably 1/16 which will do fine in a 1x1 tube, it is pretty strong, it will take a pretty good load in line but for any kind of span you will need braces every foot probably as it doesn't like side loads.

Also watch the temper if you are going to bend it, if the tube is too hard it will break if you bend it much, it needs to be a 4-5 rockwell to bend.

Thanks. there shouldnt be any side loads, just a cooler, tv, or person on top, pretty much like a sundeck. and i wasn't going to bend it, just make two boxes over the gas tanks and connect them in the middle.
