Good day to all
I am just drawning up a plan for building a trailer for my kit pontoon boat and was looking for some advice on preferences to length.

The pontoons are 19' 3" long and 25" wide with a deck size of 8' x 18'. Don't have any idea just yet as to actul weight of boat.

My question is being I will be building the trailer myself is there any advantage to haveing a bigger trailer in length than needed. I am sure there are pro and cons to haveing a longer trailer than needed.

I am considering a total length 24' long but 2' of the front tounge will have one of those space saver fronts that folds back.

What are your views?

i like longer tongues, so you can float the boat off. as far as support, you just need bunks, the length of the flat part of the tubes.

Re: Pontoon trailer preferences

I built my own. To save money, time and labor, I sourced a frame from a "decommissioned" RV trailer. There are plenty of them around and price will range from FREE to a few hundred bucks. You will get 2 3500 lb. axles, sturdy frame, springs, electric brakes, tongue, hitch and tongue jack. All that is left is wiring, bunks, stop bar and winch. If you get one long enough, you won't have to move the axles to balance the weight properly, simply find the sweet spot for the boat to sit and cut off the extra on the back. In my case, I found a 28' RV suited my 20' pontoon. Switching from the rotted 15" wheels to 13" or 14" trailer wheels and tires will put the height close to or the same as a manufactured pontoon trailer.
