I am thinking about buying my friends granddads pontoon boat. What do you think I should offer him? The floor feels pretty solid. Engine works fine. 70HP. Does not come with a trailer.

Ill have to do some rewiring, new carpet, seats. All that stuff.

help if we new the length, and year of the motor. looks 18-20, you have $1500 in upolstery to replace so you are basicly buying a stripped toon with motor and console. expect some rot under the seats. search pontoon boats on ebay. there are a lot there but the high priced ones are not selling. what are you going to use it for, fishing, just crusing, tubing. you may not want the built in furniture, i see a lot of them in Fl that people use deck chairs, and can move them around.

Figure out what the 'rude 70 is worth and throw in a couple hundred for the boat. Should be a good place to start negotiations.

The 'toon is only worth what someone, you are willing to pay for it and what owner is willing to accept.

Yeah, sounds good. I would not mind using lawn chairs. Is there no way I can put seat covers or anything like that one it. The back seats are fine. Except for the very very back on the upper part. I guess ill go figure out how much the motor is worth. I think the toon is a 20.

Is there something I can do for the back seats, to keep them from cracking like the a front ones?

top notch running condition, with new impeller, i would go $1000-1200. is there a trailer involved. look at ebay search pontoon boats. without pictures, it's really hard. cushion are easy to cover. stretch the vinyl and staple.

Well, it definitely does not have a new impeller. No trailer comes with it.

If the floor feels solid should I need to take up the carpet to see if it is rotting?

josh, the boat is going to have to come out of the water to have the toons cleaned, and the engine serviced. this is one of the problems with a boat without a trailer. the impeller can't be changed with the engine in the water. i personally would not pay more than $2500-3000 seeing the pictures, the furniture, and carpet are trashed. hulls, and engine need to be refurbished. a trailer is going to be $2,000.

here's a couple on ebay to watch and see what they sell for, they are 5 years older, but in the same condition, and basic motor. 250130266999 and 290128228905

i'm not in anyway saying not to buy it. but i want you to know what you are getting into. true the boat in top notch condition will be worth more, but the cost of getting it there has to be taken in consideration, in the purchase price. i do a lot of restoration. pvc patio furniture would go a long way making it a comfortable boat.

oh I know its going to be some work. I don't think I am going to offer him any more than 1200. If you think I should even offer that. I don't know how much I am going to find a trailer for. But I don't mind doing it this way b/c I can buy this. Then save for the trailer. And while I am doing that, I can fix the inside up. Then take her out of the water and do he outside.

I think if the guy is really wanting to sell it, he'll take your offer of $1200. The upholstery is gonna scare away a lot of potential buyers. Your plan to fool with it now and look for a trailer later sounds reasonable for this kind of situation. With a little work, you might end up with a fairly nice boat at a reasonable investment. Should you absolutely have to get it out of the water, I've seen guys load toons on flat bed machinery trailers to get them out for lower unit maintenance.

Of come now Gentlemen.. You have not really done LU maintenance unless you have tilted the motor up in the shallows, removed the covers while standing in waist deep water and dropped the LU so you can carry it up on the bank to work on it..

Now thats doing LU Maintenance..

Yes, Well I am definitely going to get a trailer for it?

Should I worry about the impeller right away if water is shooting out a good stream?

No, scuba is ok :)
If you only need to pull it out for maintenance, beg borrow steal a trailer for the day or too..

The recommendation is to change the Impeller every two years. and you can drop the LU with out taking it out of the water, just don't drop any of the bolts..

Re: Pontoon. What is it worth?

Josh, i wasn't telling you not to buy it. i would love to find one like it in the southeast. $1200 would be a great price for it. you could just sell the motor, and scrap the aluminum, and get your money back. if you have never change an impeller i don't recommend doing it in the water. but if you have a friend who has, go for it. the worst part of the job is the shifting linkage alingment. then get some scrub pads and have a scrubbing party on the bottom of the toons. then it will be useable while you save, and work on it.

lol No, I meant that I was getting one for it. You don't think that there would be any holes in the toons do you? And I am going to have to check out the floor I guess. I don't think the floor is bad. But how much trouble is it to replace a floor in a toon?
