Man do I have an issue. Just bought a 280 express to restore and found that someone had either 1 - disconnected the waste storage tank or if had burst due to freezing temps. Anyway, I have got 25-35 gallons of Poop to clean out of the storage compartment.

Anyone ave any advice on how to do this safely and to sanitize the compartment?

Thanks in advance.

I don't have an answer for you, but your problem is not really a Carver problem and a boating problem. Going to move this to Boat topics and questions. Perhaps someone has went through this with some other type boat.

Lots of Lysol, rubber gloves, a "clean suit" and an old fashioned clothes line clip for your nose! Unfortunately, there isn't much of an alternative. For washing and rinsing, you may want to run a garden hose off of the drain outlet on your water heater.

GET A TYVEK SUIT. And some bleach.

Also, I am sure there is some type of "neutralizer" to pour over it before attempting to clean it up. Something like the chemical treatment for porta-pottis or something similar. I'd start googlin'......

Duuuude,
You bought a sh!++y boat.
Sorry - couldn't stop myself. :D
Personally I'd go back to the seller and get my money back one way or another. If that's not gonna happen for you here are a couple questions:
How did you not smell it?
Does it freeze where you live?
If so I would address it while frozen with an army shovel or short spade. Same process if dry or solid. But get a respirator for $30 at the hardware store, all sorts of nasty molds grow on excrement.
Then scrape as much as you can out by hand with a 3" putty knife (and vacuum dust and particles) Then, on a warmer day Simple green and brush the sh!+ out of it and drain, then fill your bilge with 50 gallons of warm water and a proportionate amount of bilge cleaner and spend a half hour or so driving around the block starting and stopping to swish the cleaner around and then drain.

If its not frozen call a septic tank cleaner and see if they can pump it out for you and then repeat the latter parts above. GOOD LUCK!

Clean the best way you know how using plenty of water and bilge cleaner (MaryKate orange scent is a good one) let it dry well and paint the storage area with a good bilge paint. GOOD LUCK

Re: POO POO Mess

Where EXACTLY is this "storage compartment"? When I got my boat, the aft cabin was stained with poop. the stains were about 6" up the walls all around and included the cushions. I did not notice the smell cause I thought it was "just wet" from rain. The weather flooded the area during the buying process ( lots of rain ).

Anyhow, the mess was from awhile ago cause there was no puddles or "poop" around. I rented the steam carpet cleaner from Publix, and had at for 8 hours. I sprayed carpet cleaner, laundry softener, what ever else would not ruin the color, and the steam cleaner stuff with REALLY HOT WATER. Of coarse, I pulled out the cushions and unzipped the cover and pop those in the washer like 5 times with HOT water.

At the end, all the stains were gone and the entire cabin was steam cleaned. 5 months later, the boat smells even better, like downy! :D

If it's in the bilge area, I would disconnect the batteries, open the plug, and spray it all out. Then use ajax to scrub everything after dawning the gloves. Spray everything again and you'll have a new looking bilge. Don't use ANYTHING until it's all BONE dry to reduce the chances of ruining any electronics in the bilge.

Good luck and um....I don't wanna see pics of this one....

Re: POO POO Mess

Talked with my septic tank guy and he says it's a good thing the poop is old. Not to worry about hepatitis and aids due to the fact they can only survive 48 hours outside the body. Recomends pouring bleach in the mix to sit for a day then shop vac it out with gloves respirator and tyvek suit or comparable. He says to wear gloves and glasses. Basically, just be careful not to get it in m mouth, eyes or emerse my hands.

He thinks problem is cureable and able to be overcome. Although it's not pleasent, its not that big of a deal. Seems like a big deal to me.

Also, since its in the same compartment as the freshwater tank, won't i have to replace the fresh water lines?

Probably being a little too freaky about this but I want it back to the way its supposed too be.

Also, didn't smell it because it was frozen. A refund not in the cards.

Thanks for all the help guys and gals and look forward to your responses.

Your brothers shop vac, your other brothers front yard, a nose up tilt to the boat, lots of soap, bleach and water.

Or sell it to your brother-in-law for what you paid for it...and then forever complain about what a $hty deal it was for you,

good luck

What a crappy thread. Perhaps you can do some crappie fishing. How about Crappie Buster for a name. Sorry

Re: POO POO Mess

1) Why is a refund not in the cards? Did you buy it from a relative? "Friend"?
Your Boss?
2) If tank/lines/fittings burst due to freeze expansion, than it had to happen 1 or more winters ago. It had to thaw out for the leak to occur. How long was the boat sitting? I'm not really buying the freeze theory, however. Sounds more like zero maintenance on the part of the seller. And I'm gonna guess he was probably aware of the s**ty problem
3) Don't know where you are in the country, but if it's still frozen, and you aren't going to pursue a buy-back from the seller (which would be my choice since there are plenty of boats for sale out there), I'd deal with it while it's still frozen if at all possible. At least remove the bulk of it, and have very little left to neutralize once it thaws.
4) If you still insist in going through with this, and you say the fresh water tank has been enveloped by the "leak", than I'd definitely remove and sanitize the tank, and replace the lines. Even than I would only use the freshwater tank for greywater use.
5) Do you really want to deal with all this?? Get your money back and find another boat. Chalk this one up as a pre-buy inspection learning experience

If you get on the phone, fast enough, to your Senator...you might be able to get this 'project' included in The Stimulus Package!

This way...you can 'hire' a bunch of workers...get a Federal grant...and help save the economy.

Do this before the unions find out about you....
