#28 was replaced. To set the float level and float drop I used the directions and paper ruler that were included in the Merc rebuild kit.

Did you soak 1 or two day's in solvent of some sort and clean the carb with high pressure air? Your idle circut seems to work but the nothing else..Can you pump the throttle and see the accel pump stream...nice and even stream

18-24 hours I believe soaking, then spray carb cleaner, then LOTS of compressed air in every nook I could find.

Diconnect the throttle cable get a turkey baster and fill it with gas. Start the motor and let it idle...gently open the throttle if it dies baste that tukey with a shot of gas...Serious now aplly some gas from the baster and see if that allow's the engine to rev..Umm wear a cap and some saftey glasses

If the smoke/emissions cleared after a minute of two then it was probably just cleaning fluid residue burning off. If it continued when engine was warm then that would be an indication of a rich mixture.

Ok so judging by this photo, you may be on to something :p

This was the condition of all 6 plugs when I revisited this earlier today. I cleaned all of them until they looked almost new aside from the porcelain which was still grayish. After putting them back in an running the engine for 5 minutes, I checked all 6 of them again, and they looked exactly like they did before I cleaned them.

So does this mean I rebuilt the carburetor incorrectly, or something else?

Ayuh,.... It means it's runnin' Extremely Rich,....

Why could be a bad rebuild, or bad settings.... any of the settings....

Good thing you didnt baste that thing....Your carb is doing it plenty well....your fuel pump what psi??? and that electronic choke you can by pass it cant you...Just stick it open with a plyer's or screw driver. If you intend to go thru the carb again soak in vinegar over night all the parts....Complete disasembly blow it out with high pressure water cheap nozzel small apatrue

:D You might laugh at that i just tried on a old carb i am still a bit schocked how well it cleans actually melts is a better term

Did you check to see if the choke is opening?

No, I didn't get a chance to yesterday, but I just finished doing it a few minutes ago.

As mentioned, I'm not very knowledgeable on carburetors, but judging from pictures I took during the rebuild and also by looking at the parts diagram, it appears there is not a traditional choke plate controlled by the electric choke (part name listed is actually "Enrichment Module"). Instead, it sees to work with the emulsion tube somehow.

So anyway, I removed the electric choke from the carb, then turned the ignition to the ON position (next would be START of course) but left it hooked into the wiring harness. I watched it for a good 3+ minutes waiting for something to happen, but it remained in the position below:

I then unplugged the choke and used my small test light to test the leads on the harness with the ignition still in the ON position. Nothing happened.

Does the choke not receive electricity until you actually place the ignition into the START position, or have the engine running? If so, then how do I bench test it?

Ah, this is a TKS carb. I'm sorry but I have no idea how that module works:(
Any TKS experts reading this?

Done some research - the TKS carb relies on sensor data input to work. When the ignition is on the module heats up internally and the plunger extends to close off the "enrichment fuel air passage". If the plunger doesn't move, then that is probably the reason for the rich mixture.
Have you searched the forums? There have been many threads on TKS carbs. I just read this test -
Start engine and remove the flame arrester - you should hear a whistling sound. This indicates the enrichment system is operating ( plunger is retracted). After several minutes ( may be 5 or 6 or more) of running the engine should be warmed up and the whistling will stop ( plunger extended ). If the whistling doesn't stop, then the enrichment system module isn't working.
