I bought a 96 cajun that been crashed into trailer on a windy day while tring to load apperantly scrapped the keel hard enough that the old owner fiberglassed it to strengthen it up. he painted it with a can of spray paint. the paint didnt stay on long but the repair has lasted it seems.i would like to make this look a little better and make the hull all the same color. What needs to be done???boat damage 2.jpgboat damage 1.jpg

Re: poor hull repair

This is one of the first times that a person has posted a pic of a repair done by the previous owner where it may look to be OK.

I can't tell that much from the pic, but it looks like you may just be able to prep the surface gael coat it, it still won't be a perfect match though.

The first step is to sand off all the old paint to see what the repair actually looks like, then well will be able give better advise

Re: poor hull repair

He means it looks like plywood, but I would say it's white gel coat that was glassed over. Get out the sander so we can see exactly what's under there.

Re: poor hull repair

The way it was explained to me is that he overlaid the gel coat with fiberglass . then spray painted with an off the shelf can of spray paint. Ill get to sanding and come back with more pic asap. thanks

Re: poor hull repair

Glassing over gel coat isn't correct, but depending on how he prepped the surface and what the damage was like, it can work out fine.

Yup..looks like plywood instead of glass/gel.

I have a good screen but bad eyes ;) .. why all the black rot looking stuff under the glass then ?

Gel does not rot .. Glass does not rot.. so why the Black Blotches ?

Can you see from the inside ? If so can you post up some pics for that location please.

Re: poor hull repair

I assume the black spots are where the gel coat was either removed by the trailer during the incident or a grinder during the repair.

The interesting part will be to find out whether the P/O sanded everything or just slapped the glass on.

Grinders dont make that kind of profile .. perfectly round in spots so close .. hmm..

But I will wait and see :D ..
