Pop the Cap?

If I'm going to repair/replace the floor in my 1985 bayliner openbow 17', do I need to pop the cap off? Can this be done without popping the cap? I'm not sure what I'll find under the floor when I get it out,but I'm sure after reading several threads here that the stringers will need replacement as well. Maybe I'll be the exception to the rule, but I doubt it. Has anyone replaced the stringers & floor without popping the cap?

Re: Pop the Cap?

Hello maxxie, I'm in the process of redoing my deck as well. I'm not sure how a bayliner is built but my open bow seats and floor are built into the cap. I wasn't going to pop the cap, just try to work around it, thanks to this forum these guys told me if I popped it it would be a lot easier. Now looking back there's no way I could've gotten this far without taking it off. Its actually a lot easier than it looks and in the long run you'll be happy you did. Good luck

Re: Pop the Cap?

Yes Dirtdiver, the top half of the boat. I know it would make it easier, but with the limited space I'll be working in & the fact that I'm still entertaining the thought that I may not need to replace stringers, still hoping the cap won't need to come off. I guess I should just get used to the idea that this is going to be an all or nothing project, no middle ground half ***'d floor patch will do. I still have some time before I jump into it, weather here is holding in the mid 80's for the weekend, taking the boat out today & Sunday for sure. So, maybe someone out there will read this post & show me a way to do it. Anyway, gotta go hook 'er up & head out.

Re: Pop the Cap?

this is what Ive been working on http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=440021

I'll post pictures of the deck if it stops raining today, yea as for now Im doing this outdoors. My deck itself doesnt look to be in bad shape, but the I dont think I can say the same for the substructure.

I think the pain of removing the cap is offset by how much easier it makes the rest of the work. Plus, if you have the cap off, and the deck out and you come to find that you're transom needs to be replaced as well....it will be "oh bummer" instead of "*&^(&* ^&**%*&^*&*^%%(*&(*&&*"

Welcome to iBoats!
Post some pics of your project. It will greatly help us to help you. Check my signature to see how. NOTE: Leave OUT step #14. Do NOT remove the attachmnents. Or you can set up a Photobucket account. Removing the cap DOES make things easier but it is NOT absolutely necessary. Others have repaired their boats with out removing the cap but it can be more of a hassle. If the transom needs to be replaced then you will probably need to remove the cap. Your pics will help us to determine that. Is it an OB or I/O? We need more info to give you the help you need. I found pics of a 85 bayliner. Does yours look like this??

Yep, that's it. The "Boat of the Year" in '85:D (got the sticker on the dash to prove it). I'm not going to pop the cap unless I find the transom to be bad. I'm keeping the fingers crossed, but you all know how that go's.......I can't find a garage to do the work in so I'm going to move my GTO somewhere just for storage,(one of those storage places, storage only), & do the work in my 2 car garage at my house. I'm worried about the fumes in the rest of the house & the wife *****'in, but I'll figure something out to deal with the smell of the glass & resin. Some sort of ventilation system I guess.

Re: Pop the Cap?

I say, get the seats out, pull the carpet and look how the deck is constructed. If the deck inside the cuddy is ok, it may be a better idea to leave the cap on. It depends on how the factory put it together. Does your cuddy step down slightly?

Ok nix that. I see you have got down to the deck in your other thread. Being that it is a cuddy, removing the cap may be avoided. But it would make the whole job go much easier. Can you remove your rubrail with out issues? You may find that the hull joint is easy.

Re: Pop the Cap?

Hello Max..

Well your not really giving us anything to go on here...

Pop the cap or not to pop...that is the question...

Well.. It all depends on what rotted wood/deck/sole/stringers you find..

If you have to pop it..then you have to.. if you dont you dont.. you still have to Chase the bad stuff out.

We at this point dont know if your stringers are gone..dont know the condition of the transom or the extent of any damage...etc..

More info needed please..and some pics would help greatly :)

YD.
