Popping out of reverse

I have a 2001 200hp Johnson
When I put it into reverse it skips/jumps like it isn't in fully in gear.
If I shift firmly/deliberately it will usually go into gear more fully.
Ive learned from reading on the forum that I should be shifting into gear crisply not gently opps!
We thought that the cable might be stretched or worn out because we couldn't get enough adjustment to have it shift all the way into reverse so I replaced it
It seems to have helped a little but not enough
If we manually move the shift lever into reverse it will go further than the cable will go and it stays in gear without skiping or jumping out of gear
I was reading that the shift rod can be adjusted
Is this something I can do in the boat on a lift?
Or isn't it realistic to do it on the lift
Is there a detailed tutorial/instructions on the procedure to adjust this rod
It sounds like about one rotation would be about correct
Thanks
Jeff

Jeff, An OEM Service manual provides a procedure for adjusting the chift cable. It can be done on a lift. It sounds like you replaced the shift cable w/o adjusting the new one? That is not good....

Re: Popping out of reverse

Hi Chris
Thanks for your responce
Yes we did adjust the new cable as far as we could and it still jumps some times
thats what made me think that the shift rod might need to be adjusted
I was wonderoing if the shift rod could be adjusted while the boat is on a lift
I,m sure it would be easier on a trailer, but more convienient on the lift
Even though the motor is a 2001 it has low hrs
Doesn't seem like the linkage would be worn yet, though there does seem to be a lot of play in the linkage even after the the shifter is all the way into reverse
Where should I look for an OEM service manual
I'll do a search

Re: Popping out of reverse

I had a similar experience with my '79 200 hp Evinrude and found the cure to be replacement of the clutch dog in the lower foot. Personally I think proper idle speeds are just as important as the need to shift quickly into gear. My clutch dog was rounded on the reverse gear side and after replacing it, reverse gear works fine. Good luck!
