I just bought a Catalina 27 with a 2001 15hp Honda 4stroke for power in Port Orchard WA and will sail it down the Washington coast to Astoria and then up the Columbia river to to Kalama, WA. I would like to do this in the early part or middle of May. Any and all advice about this trip would be appreciated.

For what is it going to cost in fuel, worry, the risk of loosing the boat if things go ugly, why not have a yacht mover truck the boat to Kalama. It's a fairly short haul, and there is also the possibility someone has a Cat-27 trailer you could rent and do it yourself. If you've never sailed off-shore, let alone crossed the Columbia bar, it could be an adventure you might regret. If you actually do it, get a couple of experienced off shore sailors to help, especially those who have sailed at night and have crossed the Columbia bar.

I agree with Coho Ghost, if you have not done open ocean sailing don't start with a 27'. Trucking is the way to go. Your looking at 4 days of nonstop sailing just to get to Astoria, probably into the wind all the way. Look around the Puget Sound area for a trailer to rent or buy, watch Craigslist, you would be suprised what comes up... The Columbia Bar is not something to try as "Starters". Keep us posted.
Good Luck with you new boat.
