This is what I hate about Congress. They sneak in an unrelated bill onto a completely separate bill, and anyone voting against this unwarranted intrusion will be accused of being soft on terror.

This port security bill will charge banks with the task of monitoring my financial transactions to make sure I don't wager a few bucks on stupid football game!

They are protecting me from myself, getting my bank to spy on me, and they call it conservatism! Good Grief!

Without a link.... my guess is that they don't care about you gambling, they(IRS) want to make sure you report your winnings?

let's say your guess is right. What does that have to do with port security?

It's in the politics section of MSNBC, at the bottom in a list of stories (Bush signs port Security Bill). Sorry I've got a new computer and have not figured out how to post a link yet, but it's there.

I'm sure it's more about protecting the local gambling establishments from competition (Abramoff at work) rather than any IRS involvement.

Stop the press! PW and I agree! (Actually it has happened more than once, but got to be dramatic anyway!) Hate it when the keep adding totally unrelate bills to another in an attempt to push something thru that would have no chance of standing on it's own, or to stop something from going thru. Politics at its worst - well, there are worse things in politics I guess, it is all dirty and nasty.

Throw them all out and let's start over.

I also agree with PW on this one. This business of slipping in unrelated legislation makes me sick. And the Republicans have proven themselves as adept as any Democrat.

The issue itself is not of interest to me as I don't gamble, but we have plenty of government in our lives, and any more is too much.

If it can't stand on its own merits then it isn't necessary.

That was my point as well, Tom.....
It isn't because it is a bad thing....
It's because there are definately special interests who will prosper from this.......
I'd wager Vegas, Atlantic city & the Native American Nations were behind it 100%.......JK

Yup, they both do it. What really ticks me off is how campaign ads are done sometimes. They'll blast someone for how the opponent voted or flip-flopped etc... But without knowing what all was on the table at the time you just don't have an informed opinion. It's deception and I don't appreciate it from either side.

Campain ads are a joke, anyway.
I have a satellite and can watch out of area TV.

There was virtually the same negative ad on TV about Debbie Stabenow of Michigan and Marie Cantwell of Washington, claiming they individually the worst spenders in the Senate, among other virtually identical traits.
C'mon, now, they both can't be the absolute worst spender. At most, they could be tied for the worst.

Both ads blamed each of them for the bridge to nowhere in Alaska, but I think that was Ted Stevens' baby.
