I am looking for a portable generator to power my AC on occasion. I believe my AC is 12,000 btus. Does anyone know what size I would need to run this unit. I was told I need one about 2000? It would only be used to run one item at a time. I prefer to get the smallest one that will do the job. Any help would be appreciated

Re: Portable generator

You really need more like 3000 btus because of surge at start-up. The only 2000 that may work is an inverter type like the Honda EU2000. This is an excellent unit, weighs about 50 lbs, very quiet and will run for about 10 to 12 hrs on less than a gallon of gas. Only down side is that they are pricey (about $1000), I've got one that I use occasionally while dry camping in an RV--it'll run the a/c in there as long as I start the fan (in the ac) going first before I kick on the compressor--this helps limit the initial surge (and this is a 15K unit)

Re: Portable generator

I have a EU2000 which uses inverter technology and is very quiet and fuel efficient. I paid 899 for mine. It is 2000 watts peak power and 1600 watts continuous power. Mine will run my 5th wheel AC when the unit is cool but after it warms up it does not have the power to start the AC compressor. I believe Yamaha has the same type of generator but rated at 2500 watts peak and 2000 watts continuous. These generators are also very light and easy to move around.
