possible alternator noise

Hi! Never had an I/O before and am learning quite a bit. My '82 Grady White with 485 engine has been converted to an alternator. That said, was that a more efficient move than replacing the stator? The alternator is a Wagner with 1 wire. Not all the time, but certainly enough to be more than just annoying, I get a screech which appears to be coming from the alternator, particularly when I give it a little more throttle, or use the tilt/trim. Could it be that the added load on the alternator is causing this noise? The alternator kit is a low mount, and the bracket is bent slightly foreward. However, this does not appear to be causing the noise. Any thoughts? Thanks, Jim

Re: possible alternator noise

belt riding too deep in the pully, belt should be at the top of the pully.

Re: possible alternator noise

Either the belt is worn, or a little loose, slipping under load, or a bearing in the alternator is going south.

The voltage regulator in the factory setup is around $500 bucks to replace, which is what dies. You get around 17-volts output when they fail. The more durable and cost effective repair is an aftermarket belt driven alternator, which is what I've also done.... after doing the V.R. twice.
