Guys,
I have a '96 150 Merc 150 XL Offshore 2-stroke. This is my third season with the motor, and the last two seasons I have just changed my impellar. This year, I decided to replace the entire water pump, as the old housing looked pretty decrepit, and the price for the entire pump kit (including base assembly) was under $30.
Now, I was on Mercury Parts Express, and looked at the diagram for my gear housing and drive shaft. I figured out that my replacement part is 46-42579A4, and that the Sierra part is 18-3319. So, I order the kit, it arrives, and now I'm thinking that there are a couple of extra parts in the kit. Does this sound right?
For instance, the diagram on Mercury Parts Express (MPE) shows that I need only one o-ring (ref #32 on the diagram, part # 90011), but the Sierra kit includes about six o-rings (four are similar in size to the #90011, and two are about the size to fit over a magic marker). I'm assuming that these are extra o-rings, possibly because this same water pump kit fits multiple engines, and some of those other engines may call for them?
Another instance is the base assembly. The MPE diagram shows two oil seals and a retainer that go under the base assembly (ref # 30, 33, and 34). I definitely have #33 in my kit, and I think that #30 (described as a retainer that is not sold separately). There is a rubber seal that came already inserted into the base assembly, and it has a very small metal spring around a lip. The unitl that I removed did not seem to have ref # 34, and the new unit doesn't seem to have it (unless it's part of the pre-installed seal that is in the base assembly).
There are also a couple of extra gaskets included (the kit contained five or six, and the diagram on MPE only shows three plus the faceplate).
Anyway, I'm just wondering if I am good to go with my Sierra replacement kit. It seems to match the pump assembly that I took off of the motor, but I'm always a bit skeptical when I have parts left over.
Thanks.
