Re: Possible FAQ on fuel pumps. Please comment

But, I could not have put it back together without help from diagrams I found on the net. I printed the detailed diagrams (including assembly) and still have them but I cannot find the link. Someone here may know the site I'm talking about - it is real helpful and it would be good to include it here if someone can find it.

Refer to the link posted by Ezeke in reply #12 on this thread.

If I could improve on LeeRoy Wisner's square pump information, I would certainly try it. In the meantime, here is the link: http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Rebuilding_fuelpump.htm

I do have a couple of small clues about other pumps that someone might use: one is that the spring in the small square pump rebuild kit is the lighter one missing from all of the large pump rebuild kits; second is a chart that I modified to label the part numbers of the larger pumps - see below:

Please let me know if you see errors.

Have you ever tried to swap the weaker, single pump, with the larger twin pumps? Or is there not enough vacum from the crank case to instill the pumping action? Just curious if it were even possible or if you've attempted to upgrade a pump on an outboard that was designed for use with the single pump. I'm not sure at all on this, but do they have a different bolt patern? At any rate, if you've ever tried it, what were your results? Thanks.......... ALAN

P.S....... The diagram you included would be another excellent addition to the thread!! Nice!!

I like this thread and it helped me alot. I just got done doing my 72, 9.5 rude. couldnt done it with out you guys. BUT!!!
Being the first time doing this, there shoud be a warning about the springs:eek: inside when taking the fuel pump apart. Good thing the kit comes with new springs because I have no idea where that big one landed. Beside that, everything went good. Thanks.

Hey, Alan.

Would you say this is ready for transfer to FAQ?

If so, please edit the first post as you want it to appear in FAQ and I will move it.

Good job, and thanks for your contribution. :)

You, and everyone else, are very welcome JB. Glab to offer some help to others. I couldn't think of a better site to contribute my time!!! You guys do a fantastic job here at iBoats!!! Before you make this a sticky you might consider leaving the diagrams and links, that Ezeke contributed, in the thread as well. They would certainly be a useful tool to others with a different variation of the pump. One last note, I had to use an initial thread, with a reply, in order to post all of the pictures of the assembly. I was limited on the amount of pictures I could post. If that isn't a problem, feel free to stick it anytime it is convenient for you. Glad I could help others............... ALAN

Sorry, but the illustration is a little different than my pump. But I got a picture of it later in the post that at first I could not get to open.

Thanks

The fuel pump was not the issue, but I wanted instructions on how to put it together just in case I could not find other issues. See the post titled Johnson 70 Dies on Throttle Up and you will see the problem I was having and what repaired it.

Thanks again

Some of the newer, large pumps could be serviced with Kit #438616.

I'll attach a diagram below for pump #5005462. This is a pump with three hose nipples, but otherwise it is very similar to the one that you are working on. Maybe you can use the diagram in your presentation.

Will this pump work as a replacement for the the vro pump on my 60 hp Rude? I have removed the oil tank and am just using the fuel side which I am sure is going out. Plumbing and mounting would not be a problem for me. Also are there any after market fuel pumps that would fit.

This is a great and informative thread.

Lift pump #5005462 is the pump that is used in 2008 Evinrude 60HP models such as E60DSLSCS.

I'm sure if you have the correct fittings it will work for you. I don't think that BRP would market it if they were not fully confident.

Thanks ezeke. I never look at the new motors. To many good old ones. Glad to see they split the pumps.;)

Re: Possible FAQ on fuel pumps. Please comment

The pictures are worth a thousand words. Could have used on my first fuel pump rebuild. My handy dandy manual said if pump bad, REPLACE, cannot repair. They should know what their talking about shouldn't they? I stumbled on a rebuild kit from our friends at iboat and being a big fan of rebuilding/replacing when possible (and economical), just do it. I saw the kit and it had no springs so when I popped my fuel pump open I wasn't expecting the 'sproing' and what was that a spring? Where did it go? Not having info in my OMC manual I went with what looked like it should be. I'm better than I think I am or just lucky but assembled it correctly but like I said that pic would have saved a lot of aggravation and wondering.

Now who is ready to give equal time to VRO pumps and post a sticky showing the rebuild of the fuel side of a VRO pump. Given the frequency of these pumps to fail combined with the high cost of buying a new replacement fuel pump, a VRO fuel pump rebuilding FAQ would be very popular.
